The game starts with a cutscene outside the train, where a wolf is growling. Inside the train Ron, Hermione and Harry discuss Sirius Black escapement from Azkaban when Crookshanks starts running after Scabbers on the train. Harry, Ron and Hermione go to look for Scabbers. Where they'll learn Alohamora to open the door, then climb over the cases, cast Depulso on the block. Alohomora the chest and the cages to get to more chests. In next room, all three together cast a spell on the cabinet to reveal a Lumos gargoyle. Go through the revealed wall, and a case of flying books will open. Depulso the books to destroy them. At the end of the room Depulso the panel in the cage with the Depulso symbol. Alohomora the chest in the other cage, which now opens.
Continue through the next room, where Draco Malfoy attacks you with a Monster Book of Monsters. Rictusempra the pages. Continue into next room to find Scabbers. A Dementor then attacks. Once Harry has fainted and Hermione gone for help, Ron must cast Depulso at everything that appears with the symbol (The symbols will appear and disappear). Once the Dementor breaks in, Remus Lupin will appear to drive it away.
This part of the game doubles as a tutorial.

The player controls both Harry as well as his friends Ron and Hermione, while casting spells, solving puzzles and fighting enemies. Each of the three has one unique spell.
When the three (or sometimes two) of them are together, the one best suited for the task at hand is automatically selected. If the power of several spells is required for a certain task, the other characters join in the casting.
When not engaged in a specific mission, the castle of Hogwarts can be freely explored. Scattered all around Hogwarts, usually in hidden areas, are Every Flavour Beans, Pumpkin Pasties and Cauldron Cakes, which function as a sort of currency. They can be traded for Collectors Cards, passwords for portraits that lead to more secret areas, and power-ups.
To finish the game, not only must the main missions be completed, but several side tasks as well. All 80 Collectors Cards must be found, all portrait passwords acquired and several mini-games completed. These include battles against pixies and a magically animated book, and a hippogriff flying course.
