A talk about creative developments, collaborations, do it yourself projects, asian influences, kawaii culture, vintage french posters, papercuts and lots of printed matter.
From 1999 to 2002 the Golden Masters–a collaboration between graphic designers Harmen Liemburg and Richard Niessen–held audiencescaptive with their idiosyncratic and refreshing additions to the Dutch design landscape. The designers created dense maps, combining updated ‘60s psychedelics with poppy Japanese illustrations and Arabic typography in layers and layers of luscious print. In art school, Liemburg first studied cartography, then went on to fall in love with silk-screen printing under the auspices of teacher Kees Maas–a process he continuous to master. Nowadays Liemburgs work is not only printed on paper but also in huge patterns on the new tax building in Apeldoorn (the Netherlands) and on the dresses of Dutch fashion designer Alexander van Slobbe for his new Orson & Bodil collection. At the moment Liemburg is an artist in residence at the North Eastern University in Boston and teaching a workshop at Calarts. The latest issue (M) of Beautiful Decay features an interview with him and a port folio of his work.
