Season 6 of Hymnology continues with Hark, the Glad Sound! Written by Philip Doddridge in 1735, this hymn was first sung on Christmas Day that year in his church at Northampton, England. It is a hymn of Advent and gospel hope, announcing the long-promised Savior who comes to bring freedom, healing, and life.

These lyrics echo the words of Isaiah and Luke’s Gospel — proclaiming Christ as the One who sets prisoners free, gives sight to the blind, binds up the brokenhearted, and pours out His grace on the poor (Isaiah 61:1–2; Luke 4:18). What once was a world in bondage now rejoices, because the Redeemer has come.

Our prayer is that these words encourage you to rejoice in the Savior who breaks the chains of sin, heals our wounds, and gives us an inheritance that cannot be taken away. May our hearts rejoice in Christ, the Prince of Peace.

Join us for Season 6 as we journey through more timeless hymns that continue to encourage the church today. Be sure to watch, share, and subscribe so you don’t miss an episode! Leave a comment below and let us know what this hymn means to you!

1. Hark, the glad sound! the Savior comes,
The Savior promised long!
Let ev'ry heart prepare a throne
And ev'ry voice a song.

2. He comes the pris'ners to release,
In Satan's bondage held;
The gates of brass before him burst,
The iron fetters yield.

3. He comes from thickest films of vice
To clear the mental ray,
And on the eyeballs of the blind
To pour celestial day.

4. He comes the broken heart to bind,
The bleeding soul to cure,
And with the treasures of his grace,
T’enrich the humble poor.

5. His silver trumpets publish loud
The Lord’s high jubilee;
Our debts are all remitted now,
Our heritage is free.

6. Our glad hosannas, Prince of Peace,
Your welcome shall proclaim,
And Heav’n’s eternal arches ring
With your beloved name.
