Today I celebrate all who should never have been in chains in the first place. I reach out to embody and carry the wisdom of the many who never saw emancipation. On this day of Juneteenth I remind us that though chattel slavery was abolished in the United States, institutional slavery was not and Black people are incarcerated at an exorbitantly higher rate. Thus, we must remember that today, though a celebration of liberation, it is only for some and the fight has yet to be won.
