Hangi speaks Kihunde, one of several hundred Central African languages and an Indigenous language of D.R. Congo. After studying linguistics as an adult, Hangi successfully lobbied to include Kihunde in public schools and has been developing a dictionary and standardized grammar for the language.
The Kihunde language, also known as Hunde, is spoken by the Hunde people, a Bantu ethnic group that primarily inhabits the Kivu region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, as well as small parts of Rwanda and southwestern Uganda. It is a Great Lakes Bantu language, which is a Bantoid language within the broader Niger-Congo family. There are about 200,000 speakers of Hunde.
