Spalted wood of any species usually works well for friction fire making. To find spalted wood without looking inside find lightweight wood, many times covered in Lichens, or Turkey Tail Mushroom, Jelly Fungi, etc.. Today, I demonstrated with spalted Water Oak for my hand drill fire board that was collected right off the landscape.
