My dear friends, so nice to see you again! This time I play a seemingly unknown but nevertheless interesting Korean folk song in a jazzy arrangement. The name of the piece is "Han River“ or in Korean ”Hangang“ or ”한강”. The arrangement is by the Korean American composer Lawrence Lee and his book ”Korean Folk Song Collection“.

The Han River or Hangang is a major river in South Korea and the fourth longest river on the Korean peninsula after the Amnok (Yalu), Tuman (Tumen), and Nakdong rivers. The river begins as two smaller rivers in the eastern mountains of the Korean peninsula, which then converge near Seoul, the capital of the country.

The Han River and its surrounding area have played an important role in Korean history. The Three Kingdoms of Korea strove to take control of this land, where the river was used as a trade route to China (via the Yellow Sea). The river is no longer actively used for navigation, because its estuary is located at the borders of the two Koreas, barred for entrance by any civilian.

The lower stretches of the Han River are lined with pedestrian walkways, bicycle paths, public parks and restaurants, particularly in Seoul. Thus it is considered one of the places with the most beautiful scenery in Seoul, closely after Mount Namsan in the top spot.

$Chopin: Waltz op.64 no.2 in C-Sharp Minor (cis-moll) The famous waltz op.64 no.2 in c-sharp minor/cis moll by Frederic Chopin has accompanied me already for quite a while. I learned it when I was 15 and then played it on my High School graduation ceremony. Even the HipHop fraction in my school complimented me although they were not accustomed to Classical Music. Everybody loves Chopin! I like to quote one of my most beloved contemporary artists for Chopin‘s music, Pianist Kate Liu: ”He has been contemporary and classical, his legacy just doesn‘t change. You know, his music speaks to the heart. We will always be human, no matter how many generations go down the line. I really have no doubt that his music will continue timeless...There will definitely be no stop to people playing his music, it speaks to everybody! Music is the universal language and he is definitely one of the most beloved composers of Classical Music - ever. You know, even people who aren‘t into Classical Music enjoy his music, everybody knows Chopin! Chopin dedicated this Waltz to Madame Nathaniel de Rothschild. Theme A tempo giusto (”Right” tempo that suits the style): Chordal with a walking pace feel; Theme B più mosso (faster): Theme stated in running eighth notes, with all harmony in the left hand. Theme C più lento (slower) — a sostenuto (slow, legato) in the parallel key of C♯ minor (D♭ major, enharmonic equivalent to C♯ major). Besides the slower general pace, the melody is in quarter notes except for a few flourishes in eighth notes, giving this section the quality of an interlude before the dramatic restatement of Theme B. Frédéric François Chopin born Fryderyk Franciszek Chopin (1 March 1810 – 17 October 1849) was a Polish composer and virtuoso pianist of the Romantic era who wrote primarily for solo piano. He has maintained worldwide renown as a leading musician of his era, one whose poetic genius was based on a professional technique that was without equal in his generation. Chopin was born in Żelazowa Wola in the Duchy of Warsaw and grew up in Warsaw, which in 1815 became part of Congress Poland. A child prodigy, he completed his musical education and composed his earlier works in Warsaw before leaving Poland at the age of 20, less than a month before the outbreak of the November 1830 Uprising. At 21, he settled in Paris. Thereafter – in the last 18 years of his life – he gave only 30 public performances, preferring the more intimate atmosphere of the salon. He supported himself by selling his compositions and by giving piano lessons, for which he was in high demand. Chopin formed a friendship with Franz Liszt and was admired by many of his other musical contemporaries, including Robert Schumann. He died in Paris in 1849 at the age of 39, probably of pericarditis aggravated by tuberculosis. All of Chopins compositions include the piano. Most are for solo piano, though he also wrote two piano concertos, a few chamber pieces, and some 19 songs set to Polish lyrics. His piano writing was technically demanding and expanded the limits of the instrument, his own performances noted for their nuance and sensitivity. His major piano works also include mazurkas, waltzes, nocturnes, polonaises, the instrumental ballade (which Chopin created as an instrumental genre), études, impromptus, scherzos, preludes and sonatas, some published only posthumously. Among the influences on his style of composition were Polish folk music, the classical tradition of J. S. Bach, Mozart, and Schubert, and the atmosphere of the Paris salons of which he was a frequent guest. His innovations in style, harmony, and musical form were influential throughout and after the late Romantic period. The Fryderyk Chopin Institute has been created by the Parliament of Poland to research and promote his life and works.
