Hamas’ leader Ismail Haniyeh has been assassinated in an airstrike in Tehran, Iran.

Hamas said their top political leader was killed in a ‘treacherous Zionist raid’.

The 62-year-old is the most senior Hamas leader to be eliminated since the 7 October attacks.

Mr Haniyeh was in Iran to attend the swearing-in ceremony for the country’s new president, Masoud Pezeshkian.
