How can one ham radio station deliver a message to another when no direct radio path exists? This demonstration shows JS8Call using an intermediate station to store a message for later retrieval over HF.

N3JF was operating portable in England and wanted to send me a message in Finland. Because he could not reach my station directly, he stored the message on OH1FEU, another JS8Call station that both of us could reach.

Later, I transmitted a heartbeat on 20 metres. OH1FEU replied with my signal report and notified me that a stored message was waiting. I queried the station and retrieved N3JF’s message directly into my JS8Call inbox.

This is asynchronous store-and-forward messaging over ham radio. It does not require an internet connection or a direct radio path between the original sender and recipient. They also do not need to be on the air simultaneously.

The video briefly shows Winlink as another form of asynchronous data communications over radio.
