Emile is saved at long last! Since the game’s release many people have been looking for ways to save Emile after his death by the Zealot flock. Once the cutscene is over, the game force removes Emile from the mission. We tried many different ways for years to save him - duplication, putting him in vehicles, triggering Emile dialogue after his death - nothing would work, until recently.

The key ingredient to this trick working is what is called the “Clean Up” trigger volume. Essentially, what happens is there is a point in the mission which, when a player walks past it, cleans up earlier triggers, weapons, etc which are no longer thought to be in use. Harc happened to find out where exactly the clean up trigger is that removes Carter’s death cutscene, so as long as we had a way to skip past that cleanup, we could revisit that cutscene whenever we wanted, at any point in the mission. This means that we could go to the Emile death cutscene, then backtrack to the canyon and hit Carter’s death cutscene, which force spawns Emile. Emile dies, then we resurrect him. The funny thing is while testing another trick we coincidentally pulled this off.
