25 years later, I’m back where my journey with Halo began. Thank you to XBOX for providing me the game!
In this review, I take a deep dive into Halo: Campaign Evolved, the ground-up remake of Halo: Combat Evolved, and break down how Halo Studios has modernized one of the most influential FPS campaigns of all time.
From the completely rebuilt Unreal Engine 5 visuals and redesigned levels to four-player co-op, new weapons, bonus campaign missions, updated combat mechanics, and quality-of-life improvements, there’s a lot here that makes this feel fresh while still preserving what made the 2001 original so special.
But it isn’t perfect.
I also get into the cross-device save issues, separate solo and co-op progression, always-online frustrations, pre-rendered cutscenes, and the biggest omission of them all: no PvP multiplayer.
As someone who stood in line at midnight with my brothers to pick up the original Xbox and Halo: Combat Evolved back in 2001, reviewing this remake 25 years later is one heck of a full-circle moment.
