Experience the legendary story that launched one of gaming's greatest franchises. In Halo: Combat Evolved, humanity is on the brink of extinction after losing the planet Reach to the alien Covenant. The super-soldier Master Chief Petty Officer John-117 and his AI companion Cortana escape aboard the UNSC Pillar of Autumn, only to crash-land on a mysterious ringworld known as Halo.
As Master Chief battles Covenant forces and rescues surviving Marines led by Captain Jacob Keyes, he uncovers the true purpose of Halo. The ancient installation was built by the mysterious Forerunners to contain the terrifying Flood, a parasitic lifeform capable of consuming all intelligent species in the galaxy. When the Flood is accidentally released, Master Chief is forced into a desperate three-way war against the Covenant, the Flood, and the ring's AI caretaker, 343 Guilty Spark, who believes activating Halo is the only way to stop the parasite.
However, Cortana reveals Halo's horrifying secret: the ring destroys all sentient life in the galaxy, starving the Flood of potential hosts. Refusing to sacrifice countless civilizations, Master Chief turns against Guilty Spark, rescues Cortana, and destroys the Pillar of Autumn to obliterate Halo itself. Captain Keyes dies after being infected by the Flood, while Master Chief escapes the exploding ring aboard a Longsword fighter.
With Halo destroyed but the Covenant war far from over, Master Chief delivers his iconic promise: "No... I think we're just getting started." This unforgettable ending sets the stage for Halo 2 and the epic battles that follow in the Halo saga.
