This was done by utilizing the screenshot function that has been in the Halo games since Halo 3. The screenshots are initially saved as 4K images in memory then downsampled to 1080p when saved. So what we did was have the game save each frame of the cinematic while its playing. The cinematic did not run in real-time, infact it ran at about 1 frame per 15 seconds. The total console render time for this cinematic was around 1 day. The raw frames came out at about 35GBs at around 10MBs each. Lord Zedd has 4K screenshots working on Halo 3 and we are hoping to get it working on Reach.
You can find a better explanation of the screenshot process right here on an old Bungie weekly update.
