Getting out of the Beginning of Halo has been a pretty long time challenge dating back to the HIH forums! The goal is simple, break past the barrier at the very beginning of Halo. Although it sounds simple, this goal remained incomplete for many years. We had plans ranging from spawn bumping, to phasing, to revert grabbing, to even bringing 4 hammers from previous levels to try to help us breach this barrier.
All plans failed until the recent inclusion of the Acrophobia skull. A skull added by 343 to allow players to fly. We always said if we could do an animation trick in the warthog run part of the level the trick would be completed. Sadly, due to the levels design, all vehicles get pulled forward through the warthog run. When vehicles are pulled forward you can not animation trick. With Acro we were able to skip this critical force load which allowed us to perform the animation trick. The rest of the rest was easy to figure out from there.
As a side note, you maybe wondering why the beginning of Halo reloads at the very end of the mission? The beginning of Halo bsp is connected to the Picture Room bsp. Due to the Picture room needing to be loaded at the beginning for cutscene related pictures, the two bsp are connected. Here's the interesting part, the end cutscene also used pictures and requires the Picture Room to be load. Since the two bsp were connected already, Bungie had no need to remove the connection and thus the beginning of Halo is loaded at the end of the mission. The beginning is hidden 500 units away in a wall at the very end and that's the exact spot we animation tricked thus allowing our players to overlap into the beginning bsp. I hope that makes sense!
