Lately, I’ve been wanting to do some more non-Nintendo arrangements, and this song was high up on my to-do list! When you think of your typical first person shooter, a slow noir ballad featuring a saxophone is definitely not the first thing that comes to mind, so I was particularly interested in this song after first hearing it. Rain is the perfect piece of atmospheric music to fit the background of a ruined city.
I had a very hard time figuring out how I would transform this tune into an arrangement of mine, since it’s relatively bare to begin with - the only instruments really featured in the original are piano, alto sax, and a string section! I ended up retaining most of those elements, while swapping the alto for tenor sax, and adding in some drum grooves where I thought they fit the tune. This arrangement was actually originally conceived entirely absent of a drum part, but after finishing it, I decided to add in drums to give the arrangement some more forward motion. I really love the texture that these instruments ended up creating, and I’m very happy to present this arrangement to you guys! Hope you guys enjoy this foray into the world of Halo music!

Ive spent a whole year and some change covering Gen 4 Pokémon music... so why not spend a little bit of time with Gen 3? For those of you who dont know, I released an album WAY back in 2014 called Back To Your Littleroots. It was my first ever video game music arrangement album, and started my trend of creating Pokémon-themed video game arrangement albums! I think it goes without saying that my music-making abilities in 2014 were WAY different than what theyve turned into today in 2021, so I thought itd be fun to revisit one of my favorite tunes from Gen 3, and see how my interpretation of it has changed... 7 years later. In the grand scheme of things, 7 years isnt a lot of time, but for me, it feels like forever. I was in high school when I covered this for the first time!
With live music returning to a fuller extent across the United States, I recently had the opportunity to see Herbie Hancock perform here in Seattle, and seeing that show really reminded me just how much I love jazz and his particular style of music! I like music from a lot of different styles, of course, but theres something special about small jazz ensembles going at it and playing a tune together, and that inspired me to arrange this song in this way. There are times when the musical situation calls for a full expanded orchestration, and I think this is not one of those situations, so it was nice to just record some sax, piano, bass, and drums for this. I really dig how groups like the Yellowjackets use synthesizers along the typical piano sound - the long intro in this arrangement wouldnt be nearly as cool without that fluffy pad behind the piano sound :)
Hope you all enjoy this! Will probably be uploading some Deltarune covers soon after this one - Ive had a lot of stuff going on lately, but I feel like Im moving in a positive direction, and thats always a good thing :)
