Hal Cropp prepares to play King Lear in Shakespeare's tragic masterpiece.

KING LEAR
by William Shakespeare
adapted and directed by Amanda Rafuse

September 13–November 2

A genius playwright’s fierce family drama

As age overtakes Lear, he divides his kingdom amongst his daughters. Misjudging their loyalty, he finds himself stripped of the title, power, and wealth that had defined him. Now this once-revered king is trapped in an emotional hurricane ravaging his head, home, and heart.

King Lear is utterly epic in scope. It soars from the splendor of a royal palace to a meager hovel on a desolate plain—with folks from all walks of life: beggars, kings, and everyone in between. Written at the height of his game, Shakespeare delivers a work of remarkable beauty amidst its brutality, illuminating humanity’s capacity for both cruelty and compassion.
