I got invited to explore Hainan, a tropical island in southern China. I knew nothing about it. Day one and I’m already questioning everything I thought I knew about China. Started at Mission Hills Haikou, the biggest golf complex on earth. Fifty-two courses built into volcanic landscape. I’d only held a golf club once before and somehow the coaches had me teeing off within minutes.
Drove the coastal road down to Clearwater Bay, where China’s national surf team trains. Glassy waves, warm water, and a coach patient enough to get me standing on the board. Got handed a fresh coconut after and it might be the best thing I’ve ever tasted.
Stopped at the M1 Coffee Fantasy Factory for a tour of the coffee museum. Watched them roast beans right in front of us, then got to taste it. Hainan grows its own coffee and it’s genuinely good.
Ended the day with Lingshui sour noodles, a cold traditional dish from the area. Spicy, sour, and exactly what you need after a day in the heat.
One day in and I get why people can’t stop talking about this place.
