For instance, if she had to cut the chicken’s throat herself would she say she enjoyed that too, or is she just so detached from the process that she doesn’t think of the violence her choices cause?
It’s also important to apply Hailey’s attitude towards handling dead chickens to other species of animals. What we would think if someone said they enjoyed handling the flesh of a slaughtered dog? Most of us would find this abhorrent because we recognise that dogs matter morally. However, violence towards chickens is so normalised that we don’t apply our ethics consistently, even though chickens also matter morally.
Sadly, we view certain species of animals as being so unworthy and so undeserving of our empathy, that we don’t even consciously think about them as we’re handling their mutilated and butchered bodies. However, it’s important that we connect with the reality of what we are paying for and live in alignment with the values we say we have by no longer paying for needless violence, cruelty, suffering and death to be forced on to animals.
