We wanted something that have a tempo so slow that it would be challenging to play along to, to emphasise that slow doesnt necessarily mean easy in Rhythm Doctor. But we didn't want it to be boring, so we needed a style that would let us add lots of dense rhythm switchups despite the slow tempo. This chill-yet-intense genre is what we ended up choosing to base this track on.
A lot of credit helping me make a track in this style goes to Ultrasonic's tutorial: youtube.com/watch?v=Du44ZYIbH9o, so check out his channel and Illenium (the artist the tutorial was based on) if you like this kind of downtempo music!

A few tracks from our games were played along with music from other Malaysian games like Postknight and Gigabash. We'd never have thought we'd see our music in orchestra! Thanks to MDEC and DBKL of our Malaysian government for arranging and sponsoring this in conjunction with our National Day. The amount of work involved in this is dizzying, and its incredible to see it pulled off by them.

We're collaborating with indie rhythm game, vivid/stasis! A few months back, you might have seen that they added All The Times (Rhythm Doctor) and It Go (A Dance of Fire and Ice) as playable levels. This time, Saturday and Allison visit Middlesea. Fixations Toward the Stars features music by Foodbot and pixel art by Winston.
Much like us, vivid/stasis combines rhythm gameplay with characters and a narrative, so it was really fun to be able to crossover like this. Go check out the game if you haven't already!

slapped this one together in 4 hours, pretty efficient emotional impact to timecost ratio eh? i might have gone overboard and made it *too* threatening actually.
since i already had a leitmotif to work with, my first order of business was figuring out how to subvert it. so i slowed it down, and put the downbeat accents on all the wrong notes for maximum disorientation.
to thicken out the sound, the melody and bassline each have a few different instruments playing the exact same notes. the melody is a distorted bass guitar (unreal-instruments.wixsite.com/unreal-instruments/standard-bass) layered with an erhu drenched in reverb and a modified piano sound. in pianoteq you can turn down the simulated string length to get a really crunchy sound with lots of inharmonics, kinda like a mix between a toy piano and a bell. you can emulate this effect with other pianos by playing in a higher octave at double speed, then tapestretching that audio to half speed.
the bassline was very fun to write! the melody is in E minor pentatonic, so i exclusively used notes from outside the scale to create a colourful implied harmony. it’s played with filtered brasses (french horn, tuba, bass trombone) and distorted piano.
oh and btw the drum loop contains recordings of actual human heartbeats. couldn’t resist doing that.

— Composer’s notes from celesti whispers:
for this track, i started with the reharmonisation. i’m not particularly well learned in advanced harmony, but i feel like spicy harmony has kinda become my “schtick”, my “gimmick” in a way. harmony is the one aspect of my musician identity i have the most confidence in. i start off most tracks figuring out harmony and voice leading, even in cases where i would be much better off figuring out rhythm first instead. like for instance, writing for a rhythm game.
i chose guitar since there’s a bit of piano saturation in the soundtrack. unfortunately i do not understand guitar! a lot of time went into massaging the midi data so pianoteq would play the right notes on the right strings in plausible positions. it was getting to be too much work for a low-priority one-use cutscene track, so for the last section i just spammed harmonics.
speaking of arpeggios — the last section felt too empty, so i added the synth arp. i was inspired by the arp pattern in Lax Lullaby (youtube.com/watch?v=8Jo5v0yo1Mg) from void stranger’s soundtrack (very good game, go play it, don’t read any reviews). arp writing is a gap in my knowledge, despite them being an important ingredient in electronic music. this was the first time i realised you could have longer patterns with variations in note density, and use non-chord tones to add colour. obvious in hindsight, but we all start somewhere.

Composed by fizzd (@fizzd7 ) Vocals by @MardyLeith Guitar and Bass Performance and Arrangement by dvdfu (twitter.com/dvdfu) Mixing and Mastering by Ashwin Gobinath (Nadir Studios) instagram.com/nadirstudiosmalaysia Lyrics by fizzd and Kyle Labriola 'Lucky Break' melody by celesti whispers
Gameplay Video from BluPen: youtu.be/xMz2dHgKZdw --- Ok I did not mean to just randomly stop uploading daily right before 5-X oops, if you were anticipating this and I had shut your hype down I am sorry. This one needed some extra edits to reduce cutscenes which I just got round to now.
Composer's notes from fizzd: This one was tough for a few reasons:
- The level 2-X All The Times exists, so now I needed to make something that could live up to its reputation. That's on everyone of course beyond the music itself, but the music in RD dictates the amount of canvas I'm able to provide to people like Jenny and Morph to work with for their VFX.
- All the other boss battles exist. I wanted 5-X to be something whose structure and gameplay would feel different to all of them.
- This was the first boss level where it had so much story to tell to wrap up a character arc. With the other boss levels, I wrote almost all of them as self-contained stories before I figured the other levels in the act, and then let Kyle flesh it out with all the cutscenes to make it work. (Fun fact, 3-X One Shift More was literally where the characters of Paige and Ian and the Stevensons and Richard Hugh were all born. I had no idea when writing it that Paige/Ian would end up the game's main characters. It was just a "ooo doctors but Les Mis musical, wouldn't that be cool.." cause Winston (artist) and I acted in a student version of it before)
- But for this one we had a general character arc of Lucky already started on by Kyle, and we had a lot of ground to cover in 5-X to finish it.
So, to solve all these problems together, i needed some story/musical conclusion that would both be plausible for Lucky's arc, but also be able to use gameplay mechanics of that act in new-feeling ways.
The inspiration of making the resolution be "the whole hospital team comes together to learn baseball" was from a rock-climbing interview I saw a year ago, of a bouldering champion (Gavin Chiam) who had gone from competitive bouldering to coaching, and found that he was actually even happier seeing his students win than winning himself. That felt really suitable to RD's themes of friendship and relationships over work. youtube.com/watch?v=PMuHC4y0N9Q&t=1495s
So I pitched that to Kyle, he said ok we'll use that, and I struggled for months (and started and finished 5-1N etc) before finding the main melody and tempo that could work for the level.
Oops I havent started talking about the music and everyone's roles in it at all, and this is so long... I'll come back and add more on another day... Mardy, dvdfu, and Ash all did amazing work on the vocals/guitars/mixing, I'll leave it there for now. Thanks for reading!

-- Composer’s notes from dvdfu:
This level's hold-and-release mechanics were originally pitched by fizzd based on the 7BG freeform rhythm minigame, Rhythm Frog (giacomopc.itch.io/rhythm-frog). Lucky practices a series of 3 stretches, but his pace is set by the player, letting progress get ahead of or fall behind the dialogue. Since the level & music length could differ, each segment had to loop on their own as well as flow into each other as one whole piece.
The concept of rhythmic stretching for this level brought Radio Taiso to mind (specifically, Group Stretching in Animal Crossing)! I borrowed that idea of multiple movements and clean, flowing melodies to structure the song. I decided to use soul/jazz-inspired electric guitar for the melody, trying to capture Lucky's apprehensive, then cautiously optimistic feelings as he acclimates to the exercises. It also happened to add a nice bit of continuity since the same electric guitar returns in 5-X.
The 1st movement directly references the lead saxophone melody celesti composed in Lucky Break. The 2nd movement is meant to diffuse some of that tension with a calmer, cantabile melody. Everything comes together in harmony (plus a bit of call & response) in the 3rd movement. I was guided lightly by the input pattern requirements, but mostly just focused on the story's themes. It was fun to compose with such an open slate!
Definitely-incomplete list of music that crossed my mind while composing: aivi & surasshu - Theme From An Endless Romance (Steven Universe) celesti whispers - Lucky Break (Rhythm Doctor) Eloise - Intertwined Daniel Caesar - Japanese Denim Gravity - John Mayer Julien Baker - Something Shinobu Nagata - Group Stretching (ACNH)

Composed by @Patricia_Taxxon
— Composer’s notes from Patricia Taxxon:
The direction I got for this track was very simple, fizzd had a set of mechanics that could emulate janky jungle rhythms and I was taken on to make some. There's a bit of humor in this idea, the realization that the set of tools you've created add up into a whole musical idiom, and I played into it a little. You might have noticed the subtle chopped up amen break sample in the mix, but there's an even subtler moment of audible humor in the moment where the snare follows the pattern of the amen break exactly — one snare on beat, the second one delayed — & in this moment alone I play it in full with no chopping.
I also had some direction for the story & where my track would fit in, and this is where most of my creative decisions came from. I'm aesthetically attracted to the rhythm game dichotomy of "hard because its fast" versus "hard because its weird," and following the former with the latter made perfect sense for this moment of hope and hubris followed by a painful fall. The last segment with the varying subdivisions was also for this purpose, I wanted the surprise quintuplet at the very end to provoke a panicked button mash in first-time playthroughs before the track suddenly crashes to a halt, like a sudden spike in pain and adrenaline before your body stops functioning.
The writing process was super fun, since Rhythm Doctor has deterministic audio cues I could simply load the sfx into my DAW and arrange them in there. The 7thbeatgames team were actually the only ones who touched the editor, even though I decided where all the hits went. This had a lot of benefits, it let me naturally work with both the design and the sound of the track without switching into different interfaces AND it let me easily mix the track to purposefully leave room for all the ingame sounds. Play it again, and appreciate how clearly the hitsounds poke through even though there's a heckton of stuff going on in the tune.
PS: I'm aware of the frums comparisons, they didn't directly influence my style (we're just both copying the same things) but I indeed envy their ability to launder experimental glitch IDM beats into thousands of rhythm gamers' ipod playlists. I want what they have, and I hope I get hired again after this. thanks!!

work on this track started over 3 years ago! back then we thought this level would focus on cole, so that’s why it’s a remix of 2-1. sorry leitmotif fans, it’s been demoted to an un-leit motif now
i wanted to emphasise the constant timefeel changes through instrumentation, so the song uses a different percussion kit for each three: 808 snares for straight quarter notes, tambourines and claps for triplets, and another new snare for the final section in quintuplet swing.
but this function-over-form approach felt stiff and too “video game-y”. not to mention how it made the two halves feel like two separate songs shunted together. in the end i remedied this by dropping in some saxophone chops from Lucky Break to draw away attention.
fun fact: the dropouts at 2:03 and effects automation at 2:24 were a last minute addition! giacomo felt the 2nd half felt too static compared to the 1st half’s constantly switching up, and i agreed. the song changes lead to fun opportunites to add vfx too.

I found the first big idea for this song when idling after our early access release in 2021. I was looking at a rhythm trainer site where you could customise your own rhythms to practice. I made a 5 length rhythm like ‘x-x--’, thinking it’d become a simple 5/4 rhythm, but instead, the app made it a five-note-pattern in 4/4, so it was off-sync with the bar lines. That blew my mind and I knew I had to make a song with that as the basis. Now it’s 2023 and I’ve finally finished it!
Lyrics and mood: The lyrics are pretty personal, I’ve been feeling this sense of finality for the past few years, lost some things I wish i could have back again. I also tore my actual rotator cuff and couldnt rock climb for a while and went through that whole rehab process. And for me a deep nostalgia is always associated with sunset. And also the III chord, the III chord speaks to my soul.
The ‘one slip, too late..‘ was a fun cheesy line i came up with working backwards from ‘three strikes’. I didn’t think too much of it but people i showed it too were like OMG WHAT so that convinced me I should really keep it in, and even use it twice in the song. As usual Winston improved and replaced a couple of my weaker lines. My original first line lyrics were ‘won the game, lost the war, was it all worth fighting for’... he also did pretty much all of the interlude lyrics while we were on vc!
The overall sound of the piece was inspired from one day chancing across a tweet by Yeo talking about the original version of Torn youtube.com/watch?v=eODCugj1kJU. That drop halfway through is godly. There’s zero chance we could’ve pulled that type of sound off without dvdfu, they arranged and recorded all the guitars and layered them so well. celesti came up with the idea of using the baseball "charge" melody in the bg of the chorus, so good.
And for the vocals, I didn’t think we would be able to get the kind of voice at all and was ready to just settle with anything, but the rest of the team were super against using a voice that wasn't suited to Lucky, so I was like aghh fine i'll try to find someone.. my friend Hameer happened to know Brendan, and one listen to an audition of his and I knew he’d be perfect for it. Ash and Hameer both came up with a bunch of backing vocals to thicken the sound for Brendan to sing. (little snippet of recording process: twitter.com/RhythmDrGame/status/1721608360448196757) And Linferno and LilyPichu were so great with the interlude! I saw Linferno do a cover of 'wish i could care less' two years ago and got in touch again due to finding a missed DM, and then realising he would be the best Logan, and I love it so much.
The final swing beat of this level is a culmination of everything I was trying to drill into the player throughout the song, so hopefully by the time it came, the player would know that rhythm well enough that it wont seem unfair if they missed it. It’s still quite tricky, and it’s been fun to see people miss that last note and laugh instead of being angry.
Thanks again to the many hands that had a part in this, I'm so happy with how it turned out. And thanks for playing!
— Won the game, made my name, fifteen minutes worth of fame then it came, all the pain. is it over? What a shame Too tough, too rough on my rotator cuff Low weights, rehab, I've had enough Take me back to my dreams before the sun set on me When the crowd went wild Now when they call my name All my pride has turned to shame They can't see me in this state One slip, too late, three strikes, for me I've always been the, one you could, count on, so who will take my place, now im gone
Interlude L: Do you know? Did you hear? L: His play was play of the year! H: Was that him? On the news? L: Video had a million views L: They call him / a show off H: But they're not wearing his gloves L: My hero would never L + H: hesitate to take his shot
Close my eyes, count to ten, Could you take me back to then... Take me back to my dreams before the best was in the past When the crowd went wild One slip, too late, three strikes, for me I've always been the, one you could, count on, so who will know my face, now im gone

when we decided on the story and mood for this level, rejecting reality and clinging to the gold old days, my immediate association was mid-century pop music and the vapourwave movement. though eventually i decided to use guitars for the 4 cue and to flesh out the track, so it took a lean into jazz fusion.
by the way, i'm very proud of this bassline! finally used a tritone substitution in a way that sounds right to me for once. i also noticed that drum fills by themselves were lacking in energy for the transitions during the glitch nightmare, but adding some fast bass runs brought the whole thing together. it was incredibly gratifying, and makes me want to learn how to play bass. one day i want to write a bassline as good as Unison Square Garden's Sugar Song and Bitter Step.
abridged list of music i absorbed as research:
Stella By Starlight (movie version, 1944) Marlene Dietrich - Cherche la Rose (1962?) Casiopea - Tears of the Star (Mint Jams, 1982) T-Square - Cape Light (Adventures, 1984) Joe Hisaishi - Night City (Illusion, 1988) Joe Hisaishi - 8 1/2 の風景画 (Illusion, 1988) Casiopea vs T-Square (live concert, 2003) Kanno Yoko - saga (Zankyou no Terror OST, 2014) Flume - Free (Skin, 2016) Daniel Olsén - Wild Hearts Never Die (Sayonara Wild Hearts OST, 2019)

Commentary from Frums: ----- When you think about a song representing "busywork", it seems like the song should end up just as boring as the work itself. Not great for a rhythm game...
I tried to consider the thought processes and inner narratives of having to do something you can't connect to emotionally with your full effort.
"Force" without "passion"... anyone who makes things has to do a lot of thinking about "passion" nowadays, I think.
The slow down at the end tries to capture that feeling of "running on empty".

Rhythm Doctor has actually already been in early access for almost a year! We just finally got round to updating the trailer instead of using the 2017 one. Now people can see all these new levels and polish, instead of Super Battleworn Insomniac only.
Rhythm games can be especially hard to make traditional trailers for, because the gameplay clips tend to look really similar, it's just notes moving on a screen.. So when rhythm game developers make trailers, they usually focus on special key art or characters (see Arcaea or Rayark trailers for examples). For Rhythm Doctor, we at least have some levels that have unique visual things happening (like Nicole throwing coffee, or Samurai jumping over beans), so it was more possible to stick to gameplay clips. Still, we generally avoided the multi-row patient levels because those have the ECGs taking up too much of the screen.
Then we also had to decide whether to keep the audio from each of the gameplay clips to make it a montage, or to have one song over them all. We decided on the latter, which means we had to rerecord all the gameplay with the trailer song's bpm so it all syncs nicely. So none of the gameplay clips are actually of the level's original bpm. Our sound designer s9menine then added extra fun sound effects on top too that aren't in the game. This trailer is all lies!
--- Frequently Asked Questions
When is the game going to be done? This year, probably, most likely. Squeezing out more one-button interesting gameplay from this tube of Rhythm Doctor is getting harder. We really have to roll up the tube from the end now. But we can do it and you will get your last squeeze of fresh gameplay.
When is the full OST coming? Spotify? Extremely soon now!! We spent 12 months deciding whether to cut the One Shift More conversation from the OST version of the song or not. Do you want to hear the iconic line 'you havent broken your tailbone and your hip is intact' every time you play the song? Let us know, this decision has ruined us (just kidding, but for real we know you're waiting, soon!!)

It took until last year, 2020, to figure out the game mechanics I wanted for the level and finish the song. People have said this is the most Rhythm Heaven-like level in the game to them, and it's pretty clear why: the way it switches between just two rhythms is pretty similar to a couple of their mini-games. Originally this level was more complicated and had a third rhythm called a hemiola! Good thing we didn't in the end, cause it turned out people really struggled with beating this level..
The other maybe interesting thing: between 2017 and coming back to it in 2020, we changed the way SVT beats worked. Originally you'd just hear the beatsound and press some interval later. Cue.. hit! Cue.. hit! So if the cue was delayed by a beat, then you'd also press delayed by a beat. But we changed to be that no matter when you hear the kick, you still press at the same time. This change was to make the mechanic more versatile - most of RD's mechanics is about finding rhythm ideas used in pop music, and making the player feel and interact with those ideas. And the idea of shifting the kick around so its not always on 1 and 3, while keeping the snare on 2 and 4, is pretty common in lots of music. So that's why we did it! Anyway, this change let me do these little delayed hits in the song like at 1:08.
The Pokemon OST does this delaying the hit in Littleroot Town: youtu.be/im6tbN9SZXs?t=19, there's probably other tracks in the OST that did it that I can't remember now, but I think I got the idea from this one. A friend and sound designer Duncan recorded his melodica for the track after he brought it to a music jam while I was writing this song with a melodica in mind, and I was like oh, yes please. What else, hmm.. I always like recording acoustic guitars instead of MIDI-ing them so you can hear the fretboard squeaks. Usually it needs a couple of layers on top of each other - here in the intro for example there's a strumming take but also finger picking layered with it.
Well that's about it! Full OST still coming soon, a PC crash slowed things down a little but I'll keep uploading and writing notes here while I reinstall all these VSTs..Rhythm Doctor OST - Helping Hands (ft. This was the final song we did for the Early Access release, and functions as the credits for the Early Access part of the game. It was written almost 10 years after the first song of the game, 'Samurai Techno'.
Writing and recording it really felt like not just the ending of the game's story arc, but also the end of a long development journey that started with the Flash demo 8 years ago. If you played that version of the game many years ago, thank you for sticking around!
This track and level wouldn't have been possible without David who agreed to help us in our time of most need. Thanks David! Two weeks before release we had no idea if we'd be able to squeeze this credits idea in the game, and then one week later and after a couple of long Discord recording sessions, it was suddenly done!
Then in the final days before release, our programmer Morphious handled implementing the level and wrapped it up. Together with the backend of the level editor and credits programmed by other team members that made the level making process much easier, it was a big team effort that came together just in time.
Also if you found this one surprisingly difficult, that's because it's in 5/4 time! I wanted to make something that continued the idea of unusual time signatures after that boss level, but wanted it to still have an almost-natural rhythm but not quite. To do that we had this "1..2..1,2" rhythm going on through the entire song so you could get used to it even without consciously counting in fives.
David is one of those multi-disciplinary rare people who is both great at art and music, and immensely humble about it too. They did all the guitar parts with their Fender, suggested some nice little chord extension colours, did the vocals and produced it, keeping our original piano parts in. More of their stuff is on their Twitter: http://twitter.com/dvdfuRhythm Doctor OST - wish i could care less (ft. This came together in January, the month before release! We had this idea of 'skipshots' where we'd drop the snare for a beat and have it come back on the next. And this would let us fill the gap with spicy rhythms and make it more challenging for the player to hit it when the beat returned.
In the end we only used it 3 times in the song, but still it was fun. Gameplay here thanks to BluPen: youtube.com/watch?v=YJ7LUogSmPI. Those vibraslap rattles cue the parts where you have to skip the next snare and keep the beat in your head.
The lyrics of the song also accurately describes how writing the lyrics and song was like, and somehow the whole dev team found it relatable. The clever chorus line was from a comic from our friend Wai Yin (facebook.com/LWYart/photos/a.1649337965317495/2538633923054557).
Major thanks to Yeo for really stepping up with the great vocals and little harmonies and handling the mixing of it all. He's an Australian artist we've been a fan for a long time.
