Zack FreedmanThere's huge power in this 3D printer's tiny mirrors. Get a Photon D2 DLP printer: bit.ly/3B7MIKx
In this episode, we bust open a rare DLP resin printer to show how microelectromechanical systems - nay, microOPTOelectromechanical systems, make impossible tasks trivial. This fusion of SRAM, electrostatic actuators, micromachined springs, and graphics circuitry enables us to build incredibly precise, powerful, and high-performance displays. There's a science fair model, tiny Warframes, a projector that's also a car headlight, half a snake, and penny-pinching regret. It's a fun time.
About the title: the Photon D2's resolution is 2560x1440, but on the DLP chip, those pixels are surrounded by a buffer zone of partially-broken micromirrors. It's a method of increasing production yield, and means that even though this 2k printer drives 3.68 micromirrors, the chip itself contains well over four million in total. Most of those could function, but the display driver leaves them in the neutral position to keep the resolution predictable.

===*COCKTAIL RECIPES - SPOILERS!!*===
*Quantum Nebula by ChatGPT* - Guessed RIGHT! - 1.5oz Galactic Gin (Tanqueray No. Ten) - 0.5oz Andromeda Amaretto (Disaronno) - 0.5oz Nebula Nectar (St-Germain) - 0.75oz Cosmic Citrus juice (2:1 lemon and lime) - Garnish: Edible glitter Shake and serve neat in coupe or Cosmopolitan glass. Sprinkle glitter on top. ZACK'S NOTES: Use Meyer lemons in juice blend. Clarify juice with agar or centrifuge. Shake glitter in, and Garnish with a cherry wrapped in a lemon peel (like a ringed planet!)
*The Five Elements by Frederick Yarm* - Guessed RIGHT! - kindredcocktails.com/cocktail/five-elements ZACK'S NOTES: Substitute apple brandy or Calvados for the Cognac. Scuff cinnamon stick with Microplane before adding. The cocktail creator DID NOT come up with the symbology - that was all ChatGPT.
*The Gods Must Be Lazy by sbumgarner* - Guessed WRONG! - kindredcocktails.com/cocktail/gods-must-be-lazy ZACK'S NOTES: The syrup is necessary. Do not substitute any ingredients - this is a very sensitive cocktail!
*Thistle & Hearth by ChatGPT* - Guessed WRONG! - 2oz Highlands Scotch (Glenfiddich 12) - 0.75oz Drambuie - 0.5oz Lemon juice - 0.25oz Maple syrup - 2 dashes Angostura - Garnish: Lemon peel, small bundle of thyme Shake hard and serve down over a large rock. Slap thyme against your palm, snap lemon peel over the drink, and drop both in. ZACK'S NOTES: Any Scotch can be used, including peated and blended. Use Meyer lemon juice and peel. Shake a sprig of thyme along with cocktail and fine strain. Drambuie should be 0.5oz and Ango bitters are not necessary. To make my fancy garnish, wrap peel around midpoint of thyme bundle and spear the whole thing with a pick.
*Planchette by enjoythemonologue* - Guessed WRONG! - kindredcocktails.com/cocktail/planchette ZACK'S NOTES: Substitute Cointreau for triple sec and cut orange juice. If an atomizer is unavailable, coat empty glass with an eye dropper or by just rolling a small splash around. For a planchette-y garnish, cut a triangle of orange peel. Use an apple corer to round the corners and punch a hole in the middle. Float on drink. Their infusion recipe isn't great. Instead, combine 1 cup Cognac with 1 heaping teaspoon high-quality Chai, 1 cracked green cardamom pod, 1 small smashed cinnamon stick, and a star anise. Infuse 30 minutes and strain through cheesecloth. To make cinnamon syrup, heat 1.5 cups Demerara sugar and 1 cup water in a small saucepan. When it starts to simmer, take pan off heat, add 4 small smashed cinnamon sticks, and cover. Infuse 1 hour and strain through cheesecloth.

I'm building a massive smart workshop organizer system, with mechanical vertical carousels, automatic inventory tracking, and a truly astounding number of rainbow lights. First step: Prototype the core features, registering, searching, and of course lighting the bins.
It turned out to be a great chance to show you how to prototype - aggressively cutting time, squashing assumptions, and avoiding time sinks are critical when the project is so massive.
Source code and design files for this project will not be shared. I just don't have the time to prepare such a massive set of assets. I may change this policy in a later stage - it all depends on how quickly I can pull this project together.
Also, I got to use a Pantheon HS3. It's truly bananas. pantheondesign.com

A PROGRAMMING EPISODE?! Egads! Gadzooks! It's a good one. C and C++ feature a bizarre keyword: void* represents a memory address whose data are unknown or totally absent. This meaningless map to nothing enables function pointers, universal memory management, and event-driven architecture - all practical ways to code cleaner, faster, and with fewer bugs.
This is an introductory programming video for beginners and intermediate coders. Advanced users have probably used tons of these already, but who knows? You might now know everything these five bizarre characters make possible.

It went down in the suburbs of Denver, CO In the apartment where I made my YouTube videos Printing stuff, solderin', authorin' bad puns and bits Shooting some B-roll of cursed filaments
When the plumbing above us, which might not be to code Decided it was time to go ahead and 'splode A hundred gallons poured in and our stuff got drenched And I said "Brooke, we need a new place to put my workbench."
She searched up a house and when I came in The basement was so big it made my head spin No doubt in our minds that this place was rare So we said "one house please!" and bought it right there.
Brooke shook me awake and said the movers were here! And like that, they schlepped away all my old moldy gear Looked at our house, we had finally arrived At the new Voidstar Lab, very last of its kind.

You people make me sick. I mean, I was already sick, but you made me angry too. Your shrill shrieking about my "lopsided" wearable computer reached a boiling point, and in placating your fixation with right angles, I revisited what is arguably my very first project. Turns out I'm better at 3D printing, Fusion 360, and Google Glass ergonomics after 12 years of practice. I didn't see that coming.
And give it a rest with the "OCD". Obsessive-compulsive disorder isn't getting triggered by a pair of glasses being two degrees off on the Y axis. It's counting the number of Cheerios in your bowl because if it's not a multiple of 7, the International Space Station will deorbit and flatten your mother. If you think you have actual OCD, talk to a specialist - OCD has highly effective drug-free treatments you can learn to perform yourself.

MiRage Mk3: The Mechanical Keyboard Youre Meant to Modify!Zack Freedman2022-09-29 | The MiRage mechanical keyboard's final form(s)... Build your next project in Fusion 360! https://autode.sk/3AXDyQI
I'm building the ultimate hackable mechanical keyboard, and the printed circuit boards have reached their final form! Last time, I reimagined the design but introduced tons of design flaws. Today, I don't just fix them - I double down. I designed and assembled SIX prototype circuit boards for this episode. Help.
This is (hopefully) the first hotswap Choc AND MX board, with south-facing RGB LEDs and massively more. The MiRage's halves are now totally independent, meaning infinite flexibility in size and shape. Magnetic pogo pin connectors let you instantly reconfigure, and detachable modules let you add knobs, sliders, and displays to your keyboard. There's far more to come.
I'm releasing the source files, but you should *NOT* make them! They have massive design flaws, many of which have been corrected since I shot the video. Still, someone might find a use for them. Stable versions will be released on GitHub.
*The PCBs contain artwork and fonts that are NOT licensed for redistribution. Remove the Futura typeface and sand dunes line art before forking a project or making one. You shouldn't do either though, these designs still have issues.
**The modules are no longer compatible with the south-facing boards. I had to modify them to make them work for the video.

I am so tiredMy Robot Intern: Brilliant AI Used StupidlyZack Freedman2022-06-24 | Why hire when you can hack? Come and see what you can build on OCI today! bit.ly/DevelopWithOracle
Artificial intelligence and machine learning are still too dumb to do engineering, but that's OK - so am I! The goal: Craft a robot intern that tells lies, steals code, and works for free. I borrowed a Misty II robot, added an insult generator, and hooked her up to one of the most powerful open-source text-generation models ever built. Everything goes wrong, and today there's more everything than usual.
Turns out Misty Robotics got bought out by a competitor the same week they deployed their massive software overhaul. They ended up leaving a bug in Misty's Web dashboard that gobbled up audio events before I could receive the results. The dev team was presumably preoccupied with running through the hallways, bellowing primal screams, throwing papers in the air, pressing every button in the elevator, riding dirt bikes between the cubicles, flinging spaghetti with makeshift trebuchets, and other important merger-related activities. I don't blame the team at all, and the robot hardware itself is exceptionally high-quality.
I decided not to share Misty's code because it... doesn't really work any more. I'll port the insult generator to Python and release it with the next episode. The server code is pretty insubstantial and not worth sharing either. Next time will get real spicy.

Zack Sucks at CNCZack Freedman2022-03-16 | Can Zack stop smashing his bits long enough to make a circuit board? Get your own Snapmaker CNC + Printer + Laser: shop.snapmaker.com/?rfsn=6333126.1d3fe1
3D printing is fast. Fabricating circuit boards is not. If we can rapidly prototype circuit boards right here in the Lab, I might be able to escape the bottomless 3D-printing pit of my own creation. The only problem: Milling circuit boards turns out to be way harder than I expected...
PSA: Using FR-4 was a bad choice. I should have used FR-1 (phenolic or bakelite) boards instead - they're safer for long-term exposure.
How to Mill Circuit Boards with the Snapmaker: 0) If possible, print a dust extractor and hook it up to a powerful vacuum with a true HEPA filter. Open windows. 1) Print a slopboard jig. Use it to mark holes on a one-foot square of 3/4" MDF. 2) Drill 13/64" holes on the marks and countersink. 3) Remove your Snapmaker's slopboard and install the new one. 4) Use a 1/8" flat end mill to hog a big ol' square into it. 0.5mm depth, 200mm/min feed, one pass should be enough. 5) Slap some carpet tape on you copper clad and stick it to the bed. 6) Export Gerbers with 14 mil trace and space, 0.8mm minimum drill. 7) Import top copper, bottom copper, and drills into FlatCam. Note that you may need to scale the drills down to 0.1. 8) Use FlatCam's double-sided tool to mirror the bottom copper and generate alignment holes. Position the holes at least 5/8" from the board edge. 9) Create a drilling or milling job from the alignment holes, to fit your alignment pins. Make the holes as tight as you can fit the dowels into. 10) Generate a CNC job from the alignment drill/mill job. Make sure to put G21 in the End G-Code. I recommend 0.5" depth, 0.1" stepdown, 10in/min feed. Save the resulting G-code file with a .cnc extension. 11) Open the G-code in a text editor and change the line F10 to G1 F10. 12) Install your selected drill or end mill, zero, and execute the job. DO NOT change the home position or remove the board. 13) Create drill and mill jobs from the Excellon file. I recommend drilling all holes 0.04" and smaller with your 0.8mm bit, and milling the rest with a 1mm diamond-pattern mill. Depth is the thiccness of your board plus 0.05", stepdown all the way for drills and 0.1" for mills, 5in/min feed. 14) Generate CNC jobs for the drills and mills, generate G-code, change the F[number] line to G1 F[number], mount and home the appropriate drills or mills, and run the jobs. 15) Install a V-bit or micro end mill and home Z very, very carefully. DO NOT change the X or Y origins. Check the Z in multiple places with a slip of paper to make sure the board is flat. Your Z origin should be at the lowest point on the board. 16) Generate isolation routing for the top layer. A 20-degree 0.1mm bit effectively has an 0.012" diameter. I found that one width pass was OK. Look for shorts that the tool can't cut! 17) Generate a CNC job from the isolation routing. I got the best results with an 0.002" depth, 5"/min feed, one pass. Travel Z and spindle speed are irrelevant. 18) Output G-code, change F to G1 F, import into Luban. 19) Apply a thin layer of cutting fluid or light machine oil to the copper clad. Be careful not to let it soak into the slopboard. 20) Run the top copper job. 21) Remove the copper clad from the slopboard, peel off the tape, degrease thoroughly, apply fresh tape to the newly-cut side, and use dowels to pin copper clad to slopboard upside-down. Remove the pins and zero the tool again! 22) Grease up the board, generate the bottom isolation G-code, and run it. 23) Swap in an end mill. Generate cutout G-code FROM THE BOTTOM COPPER, NOT THE TOP COPPER! Use the same settings as the alignment holes, and run the job. 24) Remove board, carefully cut out with moistened tools, clean board, and populate! 25) Use damp rags to thoroughly clean all fiberglass dust.

My wearable computer is my most critical filmmaking tool - the Optigon is the custom teleprompter that lets me deliver these ridiculously complex scripts. But it's one of my oldest projects - the Moverio BT-200 augmented reality headset is over seven years old. If I can't build the generation, everything, pardon my language, goes to heck.
I bought a pile of top-of-the-line parts, including the Moverio BT-40 and Khadas Edge-V, and if they work together, they'll create a wearable like no other. Double the resolution, six times the power, a slimmer profile, and total control - the only thing that could go wrong is everything.
Is the title and thumbnail clickbait? There truly would be major consequences if I lost my wearable, even if it's not really certain DOOM. Even a regular teleprompter would affect the flow of our scripts, and you deserve the best content-style video experience. Whether these parts will make it into the next version remain to be seen.
One hack stands between inevitable doom and unlimited opportunity - now to figure out which one it is!

My community blew my mind with some of the coolest 3D prints, radical DIY cybernetics, 3D printable jewelry, accessories, and more. The best part: You can make all these 3D printer projects yourself and look like a TERACHAD. They could be your transhuman augmentation, your next Halloween costume... or tomorrow's moistest drip. Are you shameless enough to wear these projects in public?
I scored every entry on five 20-point categories: Ease of Making, Technical Excellence, Wearability, Documentation, and Judge's Choice. The Wearable Spine and Wrist Pi were tied with 85 points, and the tie was broken by the sponsors. The CyberWitcher scored 84 points.
The grand prize is a fully-loaded Lulzbot Taz Sidekick, five kilos of retina-shredding Greengate3D filament, and fame everlasting. Second and third place got hundreds of bucks in Lulzbot store credit and a smaller, but equally colorful, pile of GreenGate filament. The rest were just for funsies. I didn't seriously enter my own contest, it was a joke.

(Every Filament Part 3)Zack Freedman2021-10-29 | Your 3D printer can help clean up the ocean! Reduce, reuse, and recycle the Pacific plastics with these six intriguing 3D printing filaments that keep waste out of the ocean.
This special edition of our Every Filament series is a fundraiser for #TeamSeas! Click the links or visit teamseas.org to pitch in. Every dollar means one less pound of dolphin-tangling trash. Bella will thank you.
While cleaning up the ocean is a critical task, only policy changes can prevent it from getting worse. Email or tweet your Senators, Reps, MP's, etc to enforce anti-dumping laws and recycling mandates. Responsible consumption doesn't substitute for preventing consumption - repair and reuse before you replace and redesign.

The result: trolling the pants off /r/mk. This episode is sponsored by NextPCB! Visit nextpcb.com/?code=Zackdd for massive discounts on high-quality PCB's. They made the boards for this episode!
My latest project is a low-profile mechanical keyboard, with three clickable displays, CircuitPython firmware, and a fully custom PCB that snaps into an ergonomic split board or a standalone number pad. Hacker types will love how easy it is to make. Keyboard nerds will hate pretty much everything; this build is a plump, aromatic Cleveland steamer all over the mech keeb orthodoxy.
This will eventually be a product! For now, you can download the files and snoop around at github.com/zackfreedman/mirage. It's not ready for you to make, but it's close.

Join me on Twitch!Zack Freedman2021-09-03 | I love streaming, but you came for snappy videos. I'm cutting the filler and keeping the sillier... videos. Yeah.
Just to be totally clear, we'll occasionally run a live stream on YouTube, but only when it's really, really spicy.
Thanks to everyone who supported our live streams - I love doing them and I know many of you love watching them. The fact is that YouTube is for videos - my viewers want tight productions, and live streams are just distractions. I hope everyone who enjoyed our YouTube streams picks me up on Twitch!
Moving to Twitch isn't just about decluttering your recommendations - it's also better suited for the slow, thoughtful pace of project development. I can get back to the original purpose of running the streams; finishing next week's project while giving you an authentic look at how it's done.
Also, Twitch's API RULES and now I can connect the Chromance to stream chat. Mwahahaha!

We talked for hours, but it felt like we could have geeked out forever. I said no more streams, but I made an exception to honor Sanjay's legacy. I hope his passion inspires you, too.
All ad revenue from this video will be donated to the Open Source Hardware Association, to perpetuate Sanjay's mission of making technology accessible to everyone.
Original description:
We're honored to invite Sanjay Mortimer to the show! He's an expert on everything meltable and printable, and today we're picking his brain. What are his favorite materials? Which plastics should YOU try next? How do they test all those parts with all those materials? What are some lost filaments from the past, and what are the advanced materials of the FUTURE?! These questions and more!
This interview should last about two hours, and we'll have some prints going in the background. We'll take plenty of questions from the audience, but SuperChats and Patrons will have priority. This is going to be an exciting one!

I get asked a LOT to use a TOLED, a crystal-clear display, to make a cheap wearable heads-up display project based on the Tenex volumetric display. So I did! The only problem is that IT DOESN'T WORK BECAUSE THE DISPLAY IS ONE INCH FROM MY EYE.
How did I make this electronics project? How did I design the headset? Why doesn't it work, and why are you wrong when you think you can make it work? But most importantly, why DOES the Optigon work?! All will be revealed.
