Can we get something working from these? Part 1.video99.co.uk2024-05-10 | The SL-C9 is a highly sought after Beta video recorder. What it lacks in hifi sound, it makes up for in slow motion functions by use of an extra playback head. They are also very useful for connection to PCM digital audio encoders. But they are not the most reliable of machines, suffering a myriad of mechanical and electrical issues. I have two of these with apparent PSU faults awaiting repair, plus a scrap machine which may be able to provide us with parts. Can we get anything running from these?

Below are a list of possible improvements, some of which may be implemented in updates by Kaiweets. FIRMWARE: 1: OVER needs to say UNDER when off the bottom of the range. This could potentially be a safety issue so it's really important. 2: The red text for the hottest point is very hard to see and needs to be changed a little to make it more visible. 3: When using the menus, the ENTER button has to be pressed to go into a menu selection, but the RIGHT ARROW should also function to select a menu item. (Also, to back up out of a menu, the LEFT ARROW should work as well as the back up button. 4: Going into the temperature range selection needs to be promoted to a higher level function, not buried in the settings menu. 5: The unit is difficult to use when trying to measure something around 120C because it keeps displaying OVER. There needs to be an overlap between the two ranges, or even a third middle range added. 6: Consider adding alarms and make that audible. Also if it could trigger an alarm on a connected PC, that could be very useful in industrial applications. PC SOFTWARE: 1: It should be possible to re-align optical and thermal images in the software, in case the alignment was not set properly during the image capture.
As regards HARDWARE, I would suggest the following updates on a future model: 1: Add tripod mount, or even two to also allow sideways mounting. 2: Add a switch to detect the cover is down and signal this on the display. 3: Try to get the optical and thermal lenses closer together to reduce alignment problems, especially when having to work with nearby objects which are moving around. 4: Add a small finger grip to the bottom of the cover so it is easier to find and open when required.

Applies to miniDV, DVCAM, HDV.video99.co.uk2024-01-05 | Mould is stronger than the tape is many video cassettes including DV based formats miniDV, DVCAM and DVCPRO. So when tapes are badly stored and mould grows on them, it will cause the tapes to snap when loaded into a player. The mould "glues" the tape together on the spools, at the top and bottom edges. In the past I've shown a process for de-moulding Video8 or Hi8 tapes, today we do the same process on some DVCPRO tapes. DVCPRO as a professional version from Panasonic, of the DV format, partly related to DVCAM from Sony. The format didn't sell particularly well, the machines are unreliable, and there were a lot of variants such as DVCPRO-50, DVCPRO-HD, and up to four tapes sizes. Relatively few people can run all variants of DVCPRO, and even less are brave enough to work with mouldy tapes!

It is specially designed to get the very best from U-matic machines via the Dub connectors which perform a similar function to S-Video though using an incompatible signal type. Today we need to test the performance of one of these timebase correctors by connecting to a vectorscope, but first we need to transcode the analogue YUV outputs of the DPS375 to the SDI serial datastream in order to connect to the SDI-only vectorscope.

From planning, to digging up the road, installing straws, blowing fibres, and connecting. We get to see what the big operators would never let you see. In this part we speak to Paddy Paddison, Chief Information and Technology Officer of Wildanet, an ISP (Internet Service Provider) who operate in Cornwall and Devon in the UK. He shows us their training centre and tells us how it is installed and works. Ian Carmichael shows us how to blow fibres through straws and connect up. In a future episode we will get to see an installation get enabled.
Also known as FTTH or Fibre To The Home. Or Fiber, if you want to spell it that way. Installing fibre in the town of Yealmpton near Plymouth, Devon.
1:19:16 Missing audio should ask the question, "will anyone be compelled to go with Wildanet or Openreach or any other ISP to get a telephone service?".

Historically important format.video99.co.uk2023-10-06 | A rare audio tape format with the catchy name EL-3779, is loaded automatically by the Philips EL 3583 office dictation machine from around 1964. It seems to use cassette width tape on an open reel recorder. But it won't even play a tape without its special microphone, so we're going to spend over an hour reverse engineering it from the schematics. This might even be a historically important format. This seemed to replace the earlier Philips EL 3581, which is what I thought I was going to be working on!
