Every once in a while, UP will send a loaded gypsum train west to Davis, CA. The train is interchanged with the California Northern to be taken north. They are usually taken up to Hamilton City/Artois, but this one in particular was destined to Harrington, CA. This video shows the chase back south of the empties. These unit trains are very cool, and pretty rare, to be taken up the Cal Northern main track. Their main track used to be the Southern Pacific West Valley Line, now owned by CFNR and known as the West Valley Subdivision. It is always a treat for the Cal Northern crews to run these big trains, as seen in this video. There's nothing better than having a good friend running the train, in a thundercab, who loves blowing that horn! UP 8439 was in charge of the train and was the only working locomotive in the consist! More power had to be added before it's trip back east to Gerlach, NV. It was a great chase and I can't wait to do it again soon! Enjoy it!
