This is a short selection from one of my Introduction to Philosophy classes taught at Marist College, a session which was focused on the Self-Consciousness section of G.W.F Hegel's Phenomenology of Spirit, specifically on the "Master-Slave Dialectic". This is a bit of an introductory-level lecture, intended to help students who have no background in philosophy better understand this rather difficult text.

In this short bit which is from midway through the lecture, I discuss two different senses that we can give to the term "life", one of which is general or abstract, the other of which is more precise, but also messier when we consider what it refers to
