To celebrate 50 years of hip-hop, we had the honour of hosting Guvna B at Metropolis Studios’ legendary Studio A in West London, for a live performance in association with Avirex.
The East London multi-hyphenate sat down with us to discuss his introduction to hip-hop culture, and why – despite his many other outlets including books and podcasts – rap music was the best medium to articulate the themes of his tenth album ‘The Village Is On Fire’, which explores his processing of a racially motivated attack.
“It was actually my English teacher in primary school that told me I had a gift for writing,” he said of the catharsis of writing rhymes. “And since then, going from writing stories to writing music, I always knew that rapping is first and foremost the easiest way that I can communicate my feelings, and most importantly process what I’m going through.”
