Each traditional Chinese musical instrument has a century-old history, a poetic message and exhibits a musical tradition with numerous classical works of Chinese music. As a composer, I ask myself: how can I create something new on this basis? How can I lend new forms of expression and a new aesthetic to these instruments, which already have such a profound and poetic background? These questions were always the points of departure for me whilst writing new compositions. In my works, the traditional Chinese instruments no longer have the handed-down role of melodic song; rather, with the most varied sounds and tones, they form completely new sound constellations and musical material that can be used in many ways. This material is expanded and developed during the course of the composition in order to determine the overall sound effect with different constellations and transformations, thus lending new and gripping forms of expression to the traditional instruments.
