Kevin Cronin the singer of Reo Speedwagon tells the story of one of the band's biggest hits Take it On The Run. It helped Hi Infidelity to sell 10 million copies and spend 15 weeks at #1. The opening line almost go thrown away but Kevin told his guitarist Gary Richrath that it had one of the greatest opening lines ever. REO was coming off another smash hit Keep On Loving you . There have been somewhere around one hundred thousand albums officially released in the rock era. A mere 15 of those have spent 15 or more weeks at the number one spot. Albums like The Beatles Sgt. Pepper, Michael Jackson Thriller, Adele 21, Prince Purple Rain, and REO Speedwagon, High Infidelity. High Infidelity” was one of my first musical memories… one of the first albums I remember hearing all the songs. I remember I was not even 5 years old, riding in my dad’s truck as the radio played. I distinctly remember him saying, this is a great song, listen to this. He proceeded to turn it up to a volume that was slightly beyond what was safe for a young child and I was grateful.
I was immediately smitten by the opening lines of this song. It went a little something like this: Heard it from a friend who, heard it from a friend who, heard it from another you been messing around, the soaring, passionate vocals of Kevin Cronin followed by the blazing guitar of Gary Richraith.
By the time it got to the second chorus, we were both singing at the top of our lungs. I was barely able to speak but, this form of communication I could speak eloquently. It was Rock and Roll and it felt amazing. As soon as it was over, I remember saying to my dad, play it again, play it again. Of course, it was on the radio. He explained to me that it was REO Speedwagon, the same band that was behind one of my other favorite songs Keep On Loving You. That’s one of the early memories I had of realizing that an artist or a band was behind 2 or 3 recognizable songs.
He said I’ll play the record for you when we get home. Previous to this he would play me Keep on Loving You, but now this band had two songs that I loved and I started laying down and listening to all of the songs. Hi-Infidelity became one of the first albums that I knew every single song by heart.
That really started my love for records as a kid just discovering the world. At first, I thought that It looked like a big black frisbee and I tried to throw it, but my dad taught me pretty quickly that that was out of bounds. The sound that came from that big black circle brought my little existence a few things, curiosity, the feeling of invincibility, wonder, but most of all it brought a feeling of pure joy.
