Guðrún Johnsen is currently on the move from the University of Iceland to the Copenhagen Business School. She worked as a senior researcher for the Parliamentary Special Investigation Commission looking into the causes and events leading up to the fall of the Icelandic banking sector in 2008; and since 2010 she has served on the board of directors of Arion bank as vice-chairman, and as chairman of Arion’s Remuneration Committee (Arion is the second largest bank in Iceland, established in 2009 from the domestic arm of the collapsed Kaupthing Bank).
Despite its tiny population, Iceland played an outsized role in the 2008-09 global financial crisis, suffering a near-total collapse of its banking sector and stock market. Understand what happened provides crucial insights into the destabilizing factors at work in international finance and the opportunities for preventing a recurrence. Johnsen has discussed these matters in her important book Bringing Down the Banking System.
