República Investiga reveals how Gutiérrez — while serving in his diplomatic post on Guatemalan state funds — maintains direct ties to the Fundación DESC and to the digital outlet EP Investiga, both registered at that address in the Doctores neighborhood. Official documents show he never truly severed ties with the foundation he created over two decades ago, which today operates under his wife's name.
EP Investiga, heir to the now-defunct elPeriódico, has published at least 43 articles with systematic attacks on President Donald Trump and U.S. government officials, putting at risk the diplomatic relationship between Guatemala and its top commercial and strategic partner. The foundation behind the outlet has received funding from Open Society Foundations and the Rockefeller Foundation — the very organizations whose directors Gutiérrez has met with repeatedly at luxury hotels in Mexico City.
All of this unfolds with the silence and complicity of Guatemala's Foreign Ministry, which chose not to respond to the findings of this investigation.
