An amphibious aircraft -- likely an Alaska Coastal Airlines Grumman Goose -- takes off beneath the bridge connecting the communities of Juneau and Douglas in Southeast Alaska, circa 1959. The Juneau-Douglas Bridge shown here was a cantilever steel truss structure built in 1935 to span the Gastineau Channel, linking mainland Juneau with Douglas Island. It was demolished in 1981 following completion of its replacement, a concrete box-girder bridge, in 1980. Alaska Coastal Airlines, based in Juneau, was a major operator of the Grumman Goose, an amphibious aircraft designed for both water and runway takeoffs and landings. Planes like these were a mainstay of mid-20th-century transportation in Southeast Alaska, providing essential passenger and freight service throughout the region (Color/silent/16mm film).
