Actress Marlee Matlin broke many barriers in her career. She became the first deaf performer to win an Oscar award, and the youngest person to win in the Best Actress category. That success was hard won. Growing up as the only deaf person in her family, Marlee often felt disconnected, not realizing the profound importance of communication until later in life.
