AlboPepper - Drought Proof Urban Gardening | Growing Snap Peas, Snow Peas & Shelling Peas in Raised Bed Garden! (Taste Testing Organic Peas) @Albopepper | Uploaded June 2016 | Updated October 2024, 16 minutes ago.
How to grow peas? This is my 1st year growing them so I had to give it a shot! Every year I like to try new vegetables in my urban garden. What plants might grow really well in your climate? What delicious varieties of fruits and veggies are you missing out on? Grocery stores offer a very limited variety. The flavor and freshness might not be so good. These are all reasons to grow things yourself!

I never grew peas before (mainly because I never really liked peas). Many people think peas are gross! In doing some research, I found that the flavor of your pea will diminish quickly. Just like with corn, as soon you pick your pea, the yummy sugary goodness starts to convert to starch. Refrigeration helps to slow down that process. But even still, a long shelf life makes for a yucky pea!

In this video, I show 3 different types of peas: Snow Peas, Snap Peas & Shelling Peas. When harvesting the snow and snap peas, you can eat the entire pod. It is less work, offers a higher yield and tastes delicious! With shelling peas, you split open the external pod casing and pop out the little peas.

Peas are a great cool weather crop to start at the end of Winter or in early Spring. Low bushy varieties (such as Half Pint) can be grown right in containers. But the taller climbing peas (Oregon Sugar Pod II / Cascadia) will quickly grow up a trellis. This makes good use of vertical space in a small urban garden. Also, you can practice succession planting by growing warm weather crops in the same space, after your pea harvest. I'm doing this with beans. I intend to devote a small space in my garden to peas from now on!

I'm convinced that gardening should be a heritage that is available to each and every one of us. We've outsourced our food production for far too long! Eating healthy, quality food is a basic human right. Our children should be encouraged to eat more fruits and vegetables at an early age. A family garden is a great way to do so. Check out my article on why we should garden:
