🌾The first rice trials in the UK! 🌾
In an exciting experiment this year, UKCEH scientists are growing rice on peatland in the Cambridgeshire Fens.
We planted nine varieties of cold hardy rice, suited to the climate of the Fens, in four specially dug mini paddy fields on an area of rewetted peat. This is one part of major field trials of a range of crops for food and bioenergy on rewetted peat to see if they can be grown in waterlogged conditions in the UK.
