Starting in 2024, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Division of Geological Survey began a long-term, field-based study to assess and monitor groundwater resources in northwestern Ohio. The study focused on the “Michindoh aquifer” that underlies Defiance, Fulton, and Williams counties in Ohio. The Michindoh aquifer is a regionally important groundwater resource that extends beyond Ohio into neighboring Michigan and Indiana, which is how the aquifer gets its name.
This video highlights the importance of groundwater resources in this region, explains how the study was conducted, outlines long-term plans for monitoring groundwater quantity, and describes how the data can be used by communities, farmers, water well drillers, and regional planners to make informed decisions about groundwater use.
This project was made possible through funding from the Ohio General Assembly and the support of the Ohio Department of Development, as well as the public entities that allowed observation wells to be installed on their properties.
