GRILL'D GREENWASHING
Grill'd is getting a little, well, grilled at the moment, over allegations that they engaged in something called greenwashing. That's when a company misleads customers by claiming to be more environmentally friendly than it really is, and the ACCC allege that Grill'd did just that between January 2021 and April 2024. You see, Grill'd were running a campaign called Tree Day Tuesday, which advertised that with every burger purchased on Tuesdays, one dollar went towards planting trees. But the ACCC reckons some of those ads were quite misleading, because they didn't clearly mention that there were also other conditions, and only burger sales that met those conditions would actually lead to a donation. That included things like ordering at the counter and having to be a loyalty member. The ACCC says that means of the more than 5 million burgers sold during the period, only about 4% resulted in a donation. Grill'd says they take consumer law very seriously and that they never intended to mislead customers, stating that the whole promotion was a positive thing that resulted in $250,000 dollars towards planting trees. The case will take place in Australia's federal court, so for now we'll just have to wait and see how things play out.
EL NIÑO
The Bureau of Meteorology has officially declared the beginning of an El Niño weather pattern. That's when there's a period of warmer-than-normal ocean surface temperatures in the eastern Pacific that can disrupt global weather patterns. It's the first El Niño in nearly three years, and the BOM says that it could become the strongest event on record. Here in Australia, experts aren't entirely sure exactly what impacts it could have just yet, but we may see less snow in alpine areas - and should prepare for hotter, drier conditions, and a longer fire season through spring and summer.
REFLECTING POOL
An iconic US landmark has been causing a stir after some very expensive upgrades that might not have gone exactly to plan. Yep, the famous Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. Known for historic moments, huge protests, and well, turning green pretty often. But it was recently treated to a $20 million dollar makeover, aiming to fix some leaks and transform it to a specific shade of blue. While spending some time telling reporters the pond would be taller than skyscrapers if you flipped it over, US President Donald Trump had high praise for the reno. But when it finally got refilled, the public's reaction was mixed. While not everyone minds the look, crews have been busy pouring chemicals that apparently don't harm the ducks into the massive pond, trying to get rid of the algae. But this job isn't exactly easy, so this could be a sort of never-ending battle to get it clear, or maybe Washington will settle for it looking a little more green than blue, leaving some people doing a lot of reflecting of their own.
LEGO SAUSAGE
At 2 metres long, a Lego sausage has just broken the record for the largest in the world, and was built by Tommy Schmidt from Germany with over 65,000 bricks to pay tribute to the German delicacy. Yum! I mean, not yum. Don't eat Lego.
DRONE SHOW
Now, the skies were rather "Droney" in China's Hebei province on Monday night when 6,000 of these drones took to the air to put on a spectacular light show for a tourism event featuring a gigantic horse, a gigantic planet, and gigantic lettering.
TASSIE DEVIL FOUND
And finally, an update on our Tassie devil friend, Mary, who recently escaped from Paradise Country Wildlife Park in Queensland. After a two-week search, last night she was found! A park spokesperson says she was found in bushland less than two kays from the park, and while she wasn't in a very good way, keepers say she's been treated at a special veterinary hospital and is now on the mend.
