Gregory Bald is known for both its historical and botanical significance. Cades Cove residents used this highland grassy bald as summertime pastureland for all sorts of livestock, including cows and sheep. Bison and elk may have grazed here before that. Famous for its beautiful azaleas, hikers conquer the steep trails to Gregory Bald in an annual pilgrimage each June. It is a magical time, with azalea blooms in shades of orange, red, pink, yellow and white. Coupled with the spectacular views of Cades Cove and the surrounding mountains, the azalea bloom and pastoral setting make Gregory Bald an especially picturesque location in the Smokies.
