Greensleeves for Double Bass and Guitar Score - arrangement, plays and score by Francesco Tesei.

Greensleeves is a famous folk melody of English tradition, legend has it that Henry VIII of England (1491-1547) composed the piece for his future wife Anna Bolena. In fact, it seems that the latter had a malformation in one hand and this forced her to cover it with long sleeves (hence the title Greensleeves, "green sleeves"; but it could also be a modification of a previous Greenleaves, that is "leaves greens").

In fact, it is more likely that the anonymous author, perhaps a lover betrayed by a woman, wrote this song towards the end of the 16th century, after Henry's death.

Variations have been made on the theme of Greensleeves, famous is that of Ralph Vaughan Williams.

The song, like all the songs of popular tradition, was for a long time handed down only orally or in the form of a manuscript. The first officially registered version dates back to 1580, under the title of "A New Northern Ditty of the Lady Greene Sleeves", but no copy of this document exists today. Traces of it are found in A Handful of Pleasant Delights (1584) as "A New Courtly Sonnet of the Lady Green Sleeves. To the new tune of Green sleeves". This title therefore seems to suggest that the passage was earlier. In Shakespeare's "The Merry Wives of Windsor" (1602) a character (Alice Ford) quotes the song "Green Sleeves" twice. Even The Beggar's Opera, John Gay's masterpiece, contains a reworking of the piece: the author keeps the music but varies the text to make it a corrosive critique of social differences (justice that punishes the poor but does not affect the rich).
Many lyrics were written and processed over time for this song, the one reported is perhaps the most famous version.

"Alas my love you do me wrong
To cast me off so discourteously,
For I have loved you so long
Delighting in your company.

Del .:
Greensleeves was all my joy
Greensleeves was my delight,
Greensleeves was my heart of joy
Greensleeves was my heart of gold
And who but my lady Greensleeves.
