Jupiter’s great red spot is shrinking. The Great Red Spot is a giant anticyclonic storm that has been raging for at least 350 years. The storm was once so enormous that it could swallow three Earth-sized planets. However, recent observations reveal it's now just big enough to accommodate a single Earth. Scientists are unsure why the Great Red Spot is shrinking. One possibility is that it is due to changes in Jupiter's atmosphere. Another possibility is that the storm is simply running out of energy or is being affected by neighbouring storms. A 2019 study showed that the storm is flaking on its edge, meaning that it could disappear within the next 20 years. Whatever the reason, the shrinking of the Great Red Spot is a reminder that even the most powerful storms in the solar system are not immune to change.
