The Great Exhibition of 1851 was the first major World’s Fair, held in Hyde Park, London, inside the enormous glass and iron structure known as the Crystal Palace. Just six months after the exhibition closed, the building was apparently dismantled piece by piece and transported 21 miles by horse and cart to Sydenham Hill, where it was reconstructed on a slightly smaller scale.
In this video, I examine how this version of his story raises serious questions about the timelines, logistics, and construction methods involved. Could such a vast structure really have been taken apart, moved across London, and rebuilt so quickly using the technology of the time? The same kinds of puzzles appear again and again in the histories of many World’s Fairs... So were these structures from the Old World Empire?
