Born in 1697 in Smithfield, London, William Hogarth’s life was sometimes as colourful as the paintings that made him famous. He married in 1729 after eloping with the daughter of his art teacher and his later work displays an obsession with the vices of man, a trait that some art historians believe led to coarseness in some of his work. But he is, undoubtedly, one of England’s great masters, as masterpieces such as ‘The Rake’s Progress’, ‘The Shrimp Girl’ and ‘Analysis of Beauty’ surely attests.
