Another entry in the Subscriber Appreciation Event! Shoutout this time goes out to Rooster Gold over in The Den of DAR.
Also, I meant to have this out much sooner, but I wasn't feeling too great for the past several days. All's good now though, it was nothin' that good hot soup and sleep couldn't fix!
So I wound up taking quite a few liberties with this one, as the original had absolutely no lead guitar parts. For the guitars in the beginning, I wound up changing the left part to play a fifth higher than the original (since I thought it made things sound cooler).
Also, I wound up sampling the original drum loop in the interest of time, and plus I liked how the original loop sounded (however, I did fiddle around with EQ and compression on it). I did however beef up my kick and other drums. Tried out another new plugin that I haven't had the chance to properly test until now (quite happy with the results!).
I had to try and get back in a "metal" mindset for this one when doing leads. Dealing with these 3 power-chord type songs is tricky. While chug-chug-chugging on the first fret, bending, then chugging on the open string is really easy, the tricky part comes with playing something melodic over that. I wound up keeping things pretty simple with the leads. I threw in the rising and falling leads towards the end to add a bit more energy for that last stretch of the cover.
Other than that, I wound up making up a new part at 2:06. Rather than have the same riff repeat again, I decided to mix it up a little. Also, for the bass during that bit, I played up on the D-string which I think helped it stand out more, compared to the rest of the bass parts done an octave lower on the E-string.
Lastly, I had a bit of fun taking one of my favorite Sytrus synth presets and distorting it. I also couldn't resist the urge to throw in a TB-303-sounding synth as well. Its most prominent during the 2nd half of the first chorus. After that, I think it helps give a nice "bite" to the rhythm/bass section's sound.
Overall, I enjoyed working on this one, as it really made me think of something from back during the TNT marathon (not sure which specific songs, but it certainly has a bit of that vibe).

Sat down to talk with the creator of the upcoming Projekt Yggdrasil sci-fi universe.
For the past two years, Vilison and I have been working together very closely in order to bring this universe into reality! I had originally hopped on board as soley just an audio and music guy. However, Ive put on many different hats so far in my time with Vilisons Productions! Compiled together a wiki with all of the lore, wrote a couple scripts/screenplays, helped with frame/shot composition, and a bunch of other things.
I personally see a lot of potential in this universe. In the beginning, were aiming for a sci-fi horror series and focus, but there are so many stories and tales to tell.
Anyhow, Ill leave it at that for now. I hope you all enjoy the interview! Also hope you all look forward to what Vilisons Productions brings in the future!

And thus concludes this little PSX Doom Mini-Marathon! Hope you all have enjoyed them. I think this is a nice tune to mellow out to for the conclusion of this mini-marathon.
Also shoutout and thanks goes out to Sraigius for being the one to originally suggest that I take on these PSX Doom covers once I had finished up D64D2! (also shoutout to him for suggesting I also squeeze in this song as well!)
So this one turned out a bit different from what I had originally set out to make. So, on the audio side of things, tonally, things here felt more dark, icy, and cool as opposed to the dark, warm, and murky vibe that I got from the original. I think my choice in synths and textures contributed to that, along with my choice to omit the claves and other miscellaneous percussion.
I wound up changing the bass a little, and quite like how it turned out. I had some muted power chords like the original, but I also threw in some strumming for good measure. I also couldnt resist recording (and making up) some clean leads with my Strat (rhythm was done with my Ibanez). I think those clean Strat bits that I recorded at the Neck+Middle pickup-position really further added to that cool and icy atmosphere that I had going in this cover.
As for the video, I had originally wanted to do something pretty fancy and more animated: a stylized monster credits sort of thing. In the interest of time, as well as the time constraints of getting everything to fit in the video, I wound up opting for moving still-shots of all these baddies that weve enjoyed blasting away all this time. I had also wanted to have all their variants shown as well, however I had issues finding Doom 3 sprites to use (which is also why D3Guy is missing from the end). Still, I tried including the monsters D64 and NuDoom versions where applicable. Also as a bit of a fun-fact, the order that they appear is the same order as the end/monster-credits!
Anyhow, with this wrapped up, its time to go nuts on the ~27 songs left to do for Plutonia! Things are going to get very active on the channel once again! Having MIDIs to work with again will certainly help (as opposed to the guess-work and transcribing that I did for a few of the PSX Doom tracks).
Im gonna aim for 2 or 3 a week, like I had done when wrapping up the D64D2 Marathon! I hope you all look forward to my adventures in finishing the Plutonia Marathon! ~DAR

MamaDemon scrambles to get her interior decor in order! Can she ready the furniture before Doomguy arrives for the final showdown later on?! With the help of some unsuspecting UAC Marines, she just might. Find out, on todays episode of DAR makes some noises!
Goofing around aside, it IS time to make some noises again, as weve got another ambient tune in the soundtrack.
To be honest, when playing through the WAD, the MIDI was so quiet that I never actually properly heard this one until I started messing with it. That, and apparently the really really low rumble part goes on for like 6 minutes after the string bits are done.
Speaking of which, I decided to omit the strings for this one. I felt like the strings made things feel a bit too musical, whereas going full synth allowed full focus on just texture and atmosphere.
Layered myself a lot of synths, and even got to play around with Pendulate (a really novel and free synth!). My favorite Sine - Spooky Deep patch returns once more, but this time with a bunch of effects thrown on to it.
For fun, I even threw in some classic Doom sound effects as well. Of course, they went through a lot of processing though. Stretched, pitch-shifted, and ran through filters, and reverbs. Made for more spookiness there in the 2nd half of the audio.
As for the video, filming on location was kind of difficult. Though I suppose I am lucky that D64D2s take on D64s MAP28 included three new areas. I didnt quite to get the full slasher flick feel that I was hoping for in this small level/video. However, I think it manages to be spooky enough. Also had to give our boys some night-vision as two of the three new areas are rather dark. (now thats something D3guy could have totally used!)
Anyways, weve got one more ambient tune left in the soundtrack up next, D64s Blood Red Shadows. After that, weve got the big climactic finish (Dream, Dream Eternal), a nice send-off (the intermission/text-screen theme), and then the wrap-up party (the stats screen theme from D64!). Feat. Robo-DAR and MC Gangsta Weeb... So since this song has been covered by just about everyone, I really wanted give it my all on this one. This is REALLY different from what I normally do around here on the channel.
Anyhow, Id like to thank everyone whom voted for Touhou during the previous COVER BATTLEGROUNDS. That match between Reimu and Cammy during Slaughtermania III was nuts! Also, shoutout to Niko for nominating this track way back (since Cover Battlegrounds II, I think). I also want to give my friend Jodnafl a shoutout as well, because I remembered that he had actually suggested I cover this even longer ago.
For the longest time, I had always intended to cover the original version from Touhou 4 LLS. However, I wound up stopping myself after recording the bass and rhythm guitar parts for that. I figured that my first Bad Apple cover HAD to be the one that everyone knows from the one video.
From there, I laid out the synth bass, and tracked the rhythm guitar parts as well. I debated whether to play the melody with my guitar, or to have it sung. I spent some time looking into alternatives to Vocaloid, like UTAU. Then I became overwhelmed by the sheer number of user-made voicebanks available for UTAU. So then I played with the idea of maybe making my own voicebank. Eventually I said oh the hell with it and in the interest of time, I decided to just sing it myself.
The rap wasnt originally part of the plan, as Im not really into rap. However, when counterbalanced with melodic vocals, I can usually dig it. So, just for fun, while screwing around during practice takes, I started switching back and forth between rapping and singing. At some point, I started thinking that maybe a Rap-Rock cover would be neat, and as far as I could tell, I dont think Ive heard anyone cover the song like this.
Robo-DAR also wasnt part of the plan either. I had all my sung vocals recorded, but I needed them to sound more electronic. I threw on some chorus and other effects, but I needed it to go even further. So, in my quest to achieve this, I dared to step into pitch-correction territory (ugh, I STILL feel dirty for going there). To my surprise, it actually worked out.
Also, I originally only intended to do the Japanese lyrics, but I wound up also mixing in the English translation throughout. I feel like it adds some more variety to the song, and might help english-speaking folks (hopefully) not feel totally lost. I also wound up replacing the original bridge part. I was planning to do that bit in Japanese, but by that point in recording, I just could NOT confidently pronounce and sing that bit right. So instead, it became the part at 3:38. On another note, I hope I didnt butcher the Japanese pronunciations too badly here in this cover. My Japanese is probably only marginally better than my Wolfenstein-German.
Lastly, in regards to vocals: the outro. I wanted it to sound more gentle and delicate, and I honestly didnt think I could pull it off. I put on my best gently-talking-to-a-small-cute-animal-voice, and I recorded the outro and then gave it the pitch-correction treatment.
Now for the video... I love how it came out, but damn did I hate myself while recording it all. Dont get me wrong, it was fun at first, but then I quickly remembered how out-of-shape I was! Ive been sore all week, you could almost say working on this cover has been a *carousel of agony* (hah!).
As I had decided very early on that I would follow the silhouette-style of the original video, I needed to try and really exaggerate my movements (so soooore). While recording, I honestly felt like a total dork bouncing around, kicking my legs out, and waving my arms around. Never ever have I danced before, I just tried my best to emulate things Ive seen over the years. Through the power of video editing, it went from looking really dorky to looking actually kinda neat (in my opinion anyway).
It was definitely real fun and interesting working with this visual style. Particularly the way I had to approach transitioning between different parts.

At last, a track written by one of the other composers involved in the project! I really liked this one, it has such a tense atmosphere, buildup, and payoff. Im really looking forward to covering more of Viscra Maelstroms other compositions later in this marathon!
I decided to go more synth-heavy for this one, but I still managed to throw in some good ol power chords halfway through. I was also going to have a lead guitar part, but I wound up scrapping it since it didnt quite sit right in the mix. Some of the new lead parts did manage to still make it into the cover though. I decided to use a piano for one of the new parts that I had in mind, and I think it came out sounding pretty nice!
Aside from the rhythm guitar and the new piano part, Ive tried to keep things faithful to the original.
Also on the topic of the mix, I decided to try doing things differently for this one. In my opinion, I think I went really nuts with all the reverbs here. Im usually more tame with my use of reverb as of late, but this time I just sort of decided to slap reverbs around haphazardly!
I also wound up layering like four different snare drums together... Well, more like three layered together, while the 4th one was brought in later when the piano part starts playing.

Man, this is probably the DUMBEST thing Ive made yet on the channel... and I loved every second of it!! Happy Halloween everybody!
Ive been wanting to do a holiday special for a long time now. I didnt get to do one last year because car fun happened around then. Then the year before that, I was busy completing the first RED PLANET album.
I thought of doing a Silent Hill cover or a horror movie parody, but I wasnt sure if Id be able to finish either in time. Then I started thinking, Why dont I just do the Spooky Scary Skeletons song?. I felt like being silly and the song itself was fairly short, so I thought Sure, why the hell not?.
I decided to do a silly fake-stage sort of setup. I also put on my best frontman/singer act as well. Doing every cheesy thing I could think of, like pointing to the crowd, the wave, jumping and dancing around, etc. It was honestly really exhausting, but man it was stupid fun just goofing off like this!
Anyways, I hope you all get a laugh out of this, and once again, Happy Halloween =)! ~DAR

Had fun using the retro-style synths again in this one. Also tried to keep things close to the original. Only change of course being the DAR-style guitar outro.
Speaking of which, part of the melody (same melody as one of the synths before the solo), was actually taken from the timpani notes in the MIDI. Originally, I was going to keep it as a kettle drum, but wound up changing it to one of my favorite synth sounds. Loved the way it sounded, and so I included it in the solo!
Anyhow, gonna keep the description short this time around. Hope you all enjoy this addition to the Plutonia MIDI Pack marathon! ~DAR

Hoo boy, this one was fun! Also quite possibly the heaviest song Ive done that also includes a rock organ!
When I had heard the MIDI rock organ in the original, I couldnt wait to hear what my favorite organ VSTi would sound like. I was worried at first that the typical kind of rock organ sound would sound too groovy and not mesh well with the hard rock. Fortunately, it worked out quite nicely. I think it gives a nice contrast, and also adds a nice texture at times.
Before getting off the topic of the rock organ, I was surprised to hear how the good ol ValhallaSuperMassive managed to turn the organ into a cool kind of synth pad. Its done during the bit starting around 2:28. Never really had an opportunity to run an organ through the SuperMassive, until now. Definitely going to keep this new combo in mind for future projects!
So, rock organ stuff aside, this songs originally a Flying Colors tune called, Shoulda Coulda Woulda. I wanted to stay true to both the original track, as well as to Jimmys lovely MIDI rendition of it!
I wound up extending the intro a bit, and also threw in some power-chords and stuff there in order to follow the original Flying Colors version. I did tweak the drums a bit here and there. I also decided to throw in some quiet/ghost-notes for the snares at times. Just felt in the mood to sprinkle a little spice in some sections. Also, I threw in some extra toms here and there, for rockin dramatic impact m/!
I had listened to the leads from the original song, and tried to mimic it sort of... though mostly, I just kinda did my own thing, and noodled to my hearts content, while trying to stay true to the spirit of the original.
I always love whenever Im able to throw in those guitar wails. Those bits that are most prominent during the 2nd verse (1:23).
Something neat that I got to do on this one was an old trick that I havent used since the Doom 1 Marathon (at least, I think... its been a VERY long time either way)! Back on the E2M4 cover, I had taken my pick and did a sawing motion and scraped it on the three thinnest strings. For this current cover, at around 2:52, I started at the bridge and went up towards somewhere around the 7th fret, and then worked my way back down, scraping/sawing towards the bridge.
I wound up modifying the bass a little. Its mostly the same, I just dropped the notes down an octave during the heavy parts, to really drive home the heaviness during those parts. Also, I was surprised at how nicely the General MIDI sawtooth sound meshed with the bass at 2:24. Pleasantly gritty!
Lastly, the only other thing I did was throw in some choir parts. Which at this point, I almost feel like something important would be missing if I didnt include them when necessary. Just adds the right texture and vibe to the tracks.

A very primal/tribal and ominous feeling track for the Wolfenstein Rising soundtrack!
This one had originally started out as a song idea that Raees had recently sent over to me. However, things wound up changing up a little bit whilst I was recreating the idea as a MIDI.
The original synth part (the one on the left) remains mostly in tact, with only a small new addition to it.
While I was trying to recreate the percussion and beat, that was when things went in their own sort of direction. I still tried my best to keep true to the original ideas primal kind of energy. I wound up doing everything in triplets, which I think really lent itself well to getting this tribal vibe. Also fun fact: this is also probably the first song in the soundtrack that was done in a triplet feel.
For the first time so far in the soundtrack (or in any MIDIs Ive made), Ive made use of the guitar fret noise sound patch. I found that it really made for a nice addition when playing along with the drums. However, not all soundfonts recreate this properly. Some wind up playing the full sound, instead of cutting it off when the note ends. So, for any of you out there that might want to use this MIDI, just keep that in mind!
The other thing that I wanted to try and recreate was the synth and electronic stuff. In General MIDI form, its more subtle than I would have liked, but I tried to make things a bit glitchy. Mainly by throwing in some electric pianos that were also playing to the same beat as the drums. That, and I also had the fifths sound patch doing some eerie rises and fades.
Speaking of eerie stuff, I also had fun throwing in the spooky xylophones. I actually wound up doubling up on those. I would have one channel and speaker more dominant, while the other channel played the same thing by quieter and delayed on the opposite speaker.
Really liking this loop that I had going, I felt like I needed to try and insert a melodic element to this track. After throwing in some piano parts, I was quite satisfied. As always, I really love adding in this sense of triumph and confidence to tracks like this.
Also, something neat that I did with the pianos here was that I layered three of them together. I had an electric piano on the left, very quietly playing the same thing as the one on the right. The one on the right is my usual honky-tonk piano sound patch that Ive become very fond of using in this soundtrack. Then lastly, I had the normal acoustic grand piano playing a bit on the left as well. Having that there, managed to balance things out stereo-wise.
Not 100% sure where exactly this will pop up in Wolfenstein Rising, but theres a good chance this could be used for the moon levels! All leading up to reclaiming the Spear of Destiny, hence the title Radiant Relic.

I had actually forgotten which track was up next for this marathon, so it was a very pleasant surprise once I loaded up the map! Ive been looking forward to doing this one, its just such a bangin track!
So bangin and heavy that I managed to snap my high-E string... whilst trying to downtune! Its funny really, the only two times Ive snapped the high-E string so far have been when Im tuning DOWN... not when Im bending, playing, or tuning back up... just tuning down! Though, Id like to think that the Painful Dreams cover from earlier took the life outta the string.
Anyhow, after being startled momentarily and shouting an expletive, I continued tuning down to Drop A#. I also messed around with my bass tone, since I remembered I had another bass amp sim that I havent used in a while. Definitely going to make use of it a bit more often since I really like how the bass has a bit more of a snarl to it here in this cover!
I also loaded up a saw synth I havent used since my Shawns got the Shotgun cover (I think). Wound up layering it with another synth to back the rhythm guitars. For dramatic and sinister effect, I decided to throw in some choirs to accompany the strings section from the original.
I added on my own little simple bit for the last stretch of the song, since I felt like the original was just a liiiittle too short.
