Did you know? The Namaqua sandgrouse has one of the most incredible survival adaptations in the desert world.
The males visit waterholes not only to drink, they actually soak specially adapted belly feathers with water and carry it back to their chicks waiting at the nest. The young birds are too small to fly long distances, so they drink directly from the wet feathers of the parent.
Scientists discovered these feathers can hold astonishing amounts of water, allowing the birds to fly many kilometers across the desert while transporting water home.
This is also why large flocks gather at waterholes at sunrise and often stay for quite a while before leaving again.
But gathering in such huge numbers also attracts danger. In this video, two falcons suddenly arrive at the waterhole and attempt to hunt the sandgrouse while they are busy drinking and collecting water. The entire flock erupts into panic as hundreds of birds take flight at once, trying to escape the attack.
Moments like these show both the beauty and the harsh reality of survival in the Namib Desert.
