Today I review the Byeolungeom made by Goryero Swords. Its an ornate traditional sword based on the byeolungeom from the Korean Joseon dynasty used by the royal guards. I talk about its features and some issues and also do some cutting with the sword. It was meant to be a quick review but ended up being quite long.
Swords: Tamahagane clay tempered byeolungeom 76 cm blade length

104cm blade and handle
76cm blade length
14cm point of balance from tsuba
34mm width at habaki
29mm width at kissaki
7mm thick spine at habaki

Tameshigiri targets
-Pool noodles-these require good edge alignment or they will not cut, very little power required. Also pool noodles that have been bent or manhandled have their fibres break and become incredibly difficult to cut as they have a tendency to bend instead

For the last two weeks I have been hung up wondering if there is an objective measurement for blade sharpness and trying to come up with one, turns out there is one that has been around for over a decade; blade edge radius and in this video I will talk about what it is and if it matters to knife and sword enthusiasts sharpening their blades.

Today I talk about my experience with Seitei Iaido. Im still very much a beginner but it has been a fun journey for the last 4 weeks and Ill continue to train hard. Ive been training at Suigetsu Iaido if anyone from Sydney wants to come check it out.
Heres a snapshot of my first 8 kata, I still havent learnt all 12 but its a good picture of my form at present. Plenty to improve upon and plenty to learn. Even just watching this video I can quickly spot my mistakes. Fixing them is another matter though.

Today I took my Kaya Windfighter to the archery range. It was unusual bringing in a korean traditional horse bow to a range where everyone else was shooting recurve and compound bows but it was a lot of fun. Im still not very good at archery but were getting there!

Today we talk about striking a balance in historic fencing. Do we push for progression or strive for preservation in historic sword martial arts? We discuss how HEMA has found a balance and how we are yet to achieve this for Historic Asian Swordsmanship, looking at case studies of Koryu, Kendo and XMA and how all of these lack balance but achieve their goals. Hopefully in future we will see more HEMA like clubs training in Asian Historic Fencing.
