At both Google I/O and Made By Google last year, Google attempted to show off for the umpteenth time their spanking new live translation feature. This time, the Phone by Google app now repeats what you said in another language in your voice, but only if you live in the United States. Unfortunately, as someone who knows enough Spanish to figure out what people were saying, a couple of the translations were either correct, contained one minor grammatical error, or were just blatantly wrong. What makes the process even more suspect is Google muted over the people when their AI counterpart says things, so unless you are a master lip reader, we can't prove if that's actually what was said or not. But for what I could understand, there were even more errors upon closer inspection. This also doesn't account for the demo failing outright then the shills in the audience awkwardly laughing or applauding to cover up the fact that the AI is either not ready or unable to connect when more than 40 people are nearby. Hooray for technology! I can now envision a future where I can now finally get subtitles for my anime DVDs, but nope, music and poetry and still broken when it comes to AI translation. If they can't even do people right, how could they get those right?
