One of the biggest mistakes animators make when drawing characters lifting objects is character or object loses structure and volume during the motion.
When a character lifts or reaches around an object, pay close attention to:
-Where the joints actually connect
-The volume and form of the object
-Keeping proportions consistent throughout the shot
-How weight affects posture, balance, and timing
Even small changes in arm placement, spacing, or body volume can make your character look realistic or completely break the illusion.
Strong mechanics come from understanding how forms move through space. Simply copying poses, frame by frame, can make the animation feel stiff or flat. The more you study weight, structure, and motion, the more grounded and dynamic your animation will feel.
These are the kinds of exercises we explore in our Traditional 2D Animation Mechanics of Motion course, where students train in weightlifting shots, character mechanics, dynamic movement, and believable motion, all under the guidance of professional animators.
