Sherman marches on Atlanta and the siege begins as Scarlett (Vivien Leigh) tries to take care of Melanie who is in labor. Scarlett, intent on keeping her promise to Ashley, employs the help of Dr. Meade (Harry Davenport) who had previously been watching Melanie's progress. However, he is unable to leave the train station where he is tending to hundreds of wounded and dying Confederate soldiers.
