In her song Snake Eyes, Goldie Boutilier (@GoldieBoutilier) sings, “She walks into the room like a true ingenue" — but Boutilier walks into the room like a true pop star. The Cape Breton, N.S., artist is someone who understands the assignment of a fully curated show: incredible vocals, stage presence and an intentionally thought-out set that brings you fully into the Goldie Boutilier universe. Split into a classic three-act story, Boutilier's show is built on three distinct moods (and three distinct wardrobe changes) that take her fans on an electric and fun journey.
Starting with an opening monologue, Boutilier lays the building blocks of a story that pays homage to her past and the fire she had to walk through to get where she is now. In between songs, her storytelling and engagement with the audience is light-hearted and quippy — she’s got comedy chops on top of singing chops! — but genuine. Wrapping Act I, Boutilier leaves the stage for a wardrobe change and returns in a glamorous oversized and iridescent navy trench with thick-framed aviator sunglasses. Act II builds the storyline by leaning into Boutlilier's metamorphosis from her early days in the music industry to her alias and the persona she channelled for her latest album, Goldie Montana.
The Act III monologue makes mention of her track Cowboy, Gangster, Politician, to which the crowd starts cheering. It's her most-streamed song to date, and clearly a fan favourite. The final act is a rise from the ashes, the final boss stage where Goldie Boutilier becomes Goldie Montana: from a woman scorned and discarded by the industry to a powerhouse who rises to the top and succeeds despite it all. What is so special about shows like this is that although it’s a performance with a character, Boutilier still lets her fans in because it’s her real-life story and she is proud of it. She finishes with a shoutout to her small mining hometown in Cape Breton, N.S., and sincerely thanks her fans, showing that she doesn’t take their love and support for granted. And with that, the phoenix transformation is complete.
