The identifying characteristics of a mushroom fruit body often change depending on the stage of life it's in. So, a given mushroom will often look very different when it's young than it does near the end of its life cycle.
That's one reason it can be helpful to take more than one guidebook with you on a forage or foray. Depending on what point in the life cycle a photo in a particular guidebook was taken, it could be difficult to identify a mushroom. But if you have more than one guidebook to reference, you have a better chance of multiple stages of a mushrooms life cycle being visually represented, which gives you a better chance of matching it to the mushroom you’ve encountered!
