Gold and Treasury yields have been rising together, with both responding to the same U.S. fiscal pressure rather than pulling against each other.

Rhona O'Connell, Head of Market Analysis for EMEA and Asia at StoneX Financial Ltd., explains what the U.S. Treasury buyback statement did to bond yields, the dollar and the gold price.

A U.S. Treasury buyback program was expanded a day after federal debt crossed a record threshold, and the U.S. 30-year yield fell only modestly before the longer upward trend reasserted itself. The operation has been compared to Operation Twist, though it sits with the Treasury rather than the Federal Reserve, whose balance sheet is separate from U.S. debt to GDP. Attention now turns to Jackson Hole.
