I set out to make something long and non-intrusive with this piece. The use of slightly melancholy chords are there with the intention of evoking some nostalgia - and perhaps also the less-than-fond memories of days gone by - and reminding you that they are just as behind you as the good ones.

As your thoughts board the return journey back to the present, take a moment to remember that you're coming back from a set-in-stone location. You can visit it, but it cannot come to you. If you happen across the rough parts of town in the future, the past ones taught you how to handle them, and you know you need never return.

Your thoughts can live anywhere in your mind, but they aren't invincible. Accept that this city has scars, and move to a better part of it. Everywhere is rent-free, after all.

And if you're tired of this metaphor, you can just use this to help you sleep or something.
