In early 1944, the United States Army recognized the need for a heavily armored medium tank designed for assault roles in upcoming operations in the European Theater of Operations. While earlier proposals for such a vehicle had been considered, they were ultimately rejected. With the new T26E1 tank not expected to be ready in time and existing designs deemed unsuitable, the Army decided to modify its standard medium tank, the M4A3 Sherman. This upgraded variant became known as the M4A3E2 Assault Tank, more commonly referred to post-war as the "Sherman Jumbo." Due to its specialized design, only 254 units were made.
